The Campmanche

After driving down 30 I'm not towing with this thing. First pics of the maiden voyage

lol I'm going to look at it on a dry day, I'm also going to install a small gauge pod so I can monitor my temps and rpm's I would like to be able to go 70, but I will hapily trade speed for power and mpgs!! It has to downshift on grades on the freeway. It is like driving with 40's and 4.10s... not that I'd know....

I believe mine has 5.38's. I cruise in fourth gear 62mph at 2450rpm right where my motor makes its maximum torque. It might be worth just leaving it 2wd and throwing a 4.88's in it or maybe 5.12's. Oh and just slow down.

Or just stuff 5.9l in it.

look this chassis is not meant to handle a 7000 lb load behind it and im not going to flat tow either because the breaks work good enough just for the motor home. Not going to happen. I will tow her dads 14' aluminum boat and thats it. I would tow a super light trailer with a couple quads maybe, but that is only after a re gear. I would rather have 4x4 then massive towing abilities because one of those isn't an option with this rig. The power isn't my biggest problem for towing it is the strength of the chasis, there are 8 feet behind the rear axle.

If anything I would put a 5.2 or 5.9 in it with an nv3500/nv4500. Don't do a 46re unless you rebuild it to start out and upgrade it with 47/48re parts... lol

You could put a 5.2/5.9 in front of an AX15 easily enough using a bellhousing from a 3.9L Dakota 5 speed, but I don't know that I'd put that much power into an AX15.

Could put an LS4 (really any GM small corp pattern / metric pattern) in front of an AX15 using a 2.5L Dakota 5 speed bellhousing (iirc they share the 60 degree GM V6 pattern with the AMC 2.5), too, but again, that's a lot of power for an AX15.

I don't know what to use as part donors to put a bigger motor in front of an AW4... whether you do or don't, I hope you flush the fluid and put a BIG tranny cooler on that sucker! Might as well make it last.

Honestly though, I definitely agree with not towing anything big with it. That's a lot of weight for an MJ chassis already.

I washed the campmanche today. It looks much better. Now I need to patch the leaks in the roof and replace some trim. Any suggestions on what kind of wax to use?

Almost jealous, but I don't get jealous. If I had this I would find a way to tow with it. And since there is enough room to work with, I would totally do a GM LQ4/6.0L truck motor with the 6l80E behind it.

If it is stock gauge setup you can always swap in a new cluster. Otherwise I know summit has one of those multi function all in one gauges. that shows, tach, oil, etc etc. Not too spendy either. I would look into that. Also not sure if its got the stock ashtray location. You can always get one of the DBO switch panel/singe gauge replacement for that. I have one, planning on running a trans temp gauge there.

A diesel truck is still in my future the campmanche is too rare to do a swap like that. Plus I would have to do major frame reinforcing. Don't get me wrong I like the lq4. I plan on eventually swapping in a lq4 matted to a 4L80e in my mj. I new gauges aren't going to happen in the campmanche because its column shift. I am going to add a small set of aftermarket gauges next to the ash tray. But it is staying renix as long as I own it. I have actually been eying some 2000 and newer suburban 2500's with the 8.1
