Texas inspection question

Do back up lights need to work to pass inspection in Texas?

I've never had that checked before. And I used to work at a shop in Dallas named Ger's where they do inspection and they don't check all that.

Yeah they do. but not all shops actually check everything. Otherwise, my jeep would fail just about every inspection...

if i may semi hijack this thread.

what is acceptable for a horn? does it have to be factory setup? can i put a button on the dash? reason i ask is my horn no worky. in the process of tracking down the reason now.

You can install your own push button on the column, or wheel. I did it with my 73 Ford LTD. They will pass it. Check the horn physical ground, at the horn. They come loose and rust, quite common cause of weak to dead horns.

i will check down there too but i know i got a loose wire under the horn button.

There is nothing in there about reverse lights. Mine havent worked since I bought the jeep six years ago and they just started working a few months ago when I cleaned the NSS so my jeep would actually start without jiggling the shifter.

i think most of the guys doing the insepction dont know what has to work or not all they care about is if it passes the smog check at least in conroe. they never drive my truck or xj they tell me to pull it in. i just make sure all the lights and horn work i never ck the backup lights

Your NSS is located on the shifter of an Automatic jeep, and it tells your jeeps ECM whether it is in Nuetral or Park so you can start your jeep, and it also tells your jeep when it is in reverse so that your reverse lights come on.

Or you can put a switch on your dash like I did to turn on the backup lights..it is right next to my horn button.

Just to clarify incase you actually go looking for it to mess with, its on the passenger side of the transmission. It is hooked up with your shifter, but you'll never find it if you start looking inside around your shifter.

I have a 1998, air bag, crusie control etc... everything stopped working on mine, everything associated with the buttons on the steering wheel. It was the ring that connects all the buttons with the stuff past the wheel. $300 for that little *#@!ing ring. Oh the horn was one of those things that didn't work.

BTW, I've never seen them check the back up lights either. I watch them like a hawk too.

My jeepster has passed 3 inspections with nonfunctioning backup lights, and I've been told that they are not on the inspection list.
It's horn is currently activated by an on/off toggle switch, and according to my inspector as long as it works and he can reach it then it passes.
