Is there an interchange listing that shows what tranny control modules can be used in what rigs? i have a 90 xj that needs a new one and i'd like to know if i need the exact number of the one i have or if i can swap it for a different tcm without any problems.

TIA

Holy smokes, long time no post. :wantyou:
So the ducky lives on???

AFAIK, the TCM from any Renix era XJ (87-90) will work in your 90 XJ.

This is actually for my friend's XJ.
Yup the Duck is still limping along (got a no start problem now).
Don't do much wheelin anymore, thinking about sell it.

They changed with the Renix/OBDI change. I think they changed in 96 with the OBD change and then again in 98 when the AW4 added a front speed sensor.

Easiest answer is that you need to match the connector color. The connections have a keying ridge that forces you to match up the color unless you file the ridge off. If your is a Renix, you should be able to file the ridges and plug in anything from the Renix or OBD-I years. Only wiring changes for the OBDI is that the diagnostic lines are obd instead of serial, but that's irrelevant since Renix just runs those pins out to the big yellow diagnostic connector under the hood.

If you haven't already, try the CPS and/or ignition module. Both of those buggers on my 87 have left me high and dry on more than one occasion. :repair:

Lawsoncl - So what I read is that the pin outs are the same? I do not have a problem interchanging a 92 and 90 or 89 TCU's The connectors are all keyed the same. Behavior is different, however. I cannot run a 90 TCU in my 92. I did not try the other way around.

The pinout is the same. Its just that the diagnostic lines end up elsewhere in the upstream harness (diag connector or obd1). What happened when you tried the 90 TCU in the 92? The output shaft speed sensor changed type from a magnetic reed rely to a hall-effect tpye, but I thought that was with the other changes that happened in 98.

I was at the pull-n-save yard last week and grabbed an 90 TCU if anyone needs one (same vehicle that donated a front axle shaft for my ZJ). It's the grey connector, part number 8953005305a. Say $20?

I'll take it.
PM sent.

Poor shift points. Very erratic shift behavior. Not really drivable. Hard to describe. In a pinch, I would do it but not otherwise.

That sounds more like a bad TPS (throttle position sensor), which is a pretty common problem for a Renix-era Jeep. The TCUs rarely go bad. I've only heard of four confirmed bad ones.
