What's the weirdest place you've worked on a car? Or the largest job you've done away from home.

Hmmm, cap and rotor in a Dodge dealer lot, fuel filter in a grocery store lot, hall effect switch in a neighborhood innfront of a random house in a nice area, starter behind my employer's old location......twice, then had to do a third one on the way home because #2 started to fry the wiring harness. Dad has swapped.a.crank trigger sensor ina Home Depot lot, a Chrysler 8 3/4" centersection in down town Elmhurst IL and who know where else.

5 feet from traffic on the cobble stone of the cross bronx at midnight. replaced a hard brake line on my buddy's cummins on the way to go wheeling. for those of you who dont know, theres heavy traffic doing 50-70 mph on that old stupid road 24hrs a day, mostly business/commercial cars and trucks with drivers who DGAF.

i never EVER want to do that again.

I did a complete engine swap on the side of the road 4 hours from my house once...

In a 1967 VW beetle.

Spun a rod bearing.

I was on the way back from Sevierville TN from a car show where I had conviently bought a new engine and had a jack with me.

My advice to you is to always car a spare engine while driving an old Beetle.

Oddest place: Ripped a shock mount off of some Pontiac (IIRC) in EAST Berlin. Was in full Class A uniform as well. Had to do something, as the shock was eating in to the rear tire pretty bad. Fortunately I had some overalls to wear. I also had an audience, a couple Soviet Military folks... they were not pleased, as it is required to wear the uniform. Anyhow, some wire and tape, and the shock was off of the tire so we headed back to Check Point Charlie and home. The car went to the junkyard the next day. :)

Alternator in a Mobil gas station parking lot with just a pry bar and 3/8 socket set on a 96 Buick Skylark.

Cap/rotor/trigger/ignition sensor thingy on my 89 K2500 5.7. Every few months or so, the ground connection would act up. Kept a pair of screwdrivers and di-electric grease in the glovebox. Truck would die and Id have to tear the top of the distributor down to clean everything. Did this a few times; Dunkie's parking lot in the rain, side on I95 in NH, etc.

4 fuel pumps in my 99XJ within one year while at school in WY. Did each one on my back in the dirt in random places, including gas skid and hitch. Stupid Airtex pumps

Coolant fitting on the intake on my Dad's 98 K3500 5.7 blew off and emptied the coolant middle of the work day. Found a nut driver in his toolbox to plug the hole and pounded it in with a hammer. McDonalds across the street gave me a 5gal bucket of water. Drove home 20 miles without any issues.

Fixes on the fly or away from my tools are always fun/an experience.

Someone tried to steal my 85 XJ while i was at work. SO it did the steering column ignition switch and new steering wheel there that night.

put a transmission back into a k5 blazer after it fell out of the rig when the driver made the mistake of trying to keep up with me in the whoops :D FYI firewood makes a workable jack in a pinch :eyes:

Driveshaft on the side of the highway- average one a week
Starter in a subway parking lot
One time I was with a friend going to pick up parts for my truck in his bronco. He broke a driveshaft in the middle of an intersection on a busy divided road. We jumped out in traffic, locked the hubs, drove 1/2 mile to walmart, bought wrenches, dropped the shaft, and returned the wrenches.

I had to reattach an intercooler pipe back on at 9 PM on the Verrazano Bridge. I've done many repairs in the college parking lot. Had to change an AC compressor on the Jeep once. Also fixed my friend's POS Pontiac that blew a radiator hose.

some of my worst nightmares happen in and around NYC bridges. the nut worked it way off my axle side trackbar bolt after bouncing around the steel plates they put on the tappan zee at 65mph. i pretty much prepared myself for fiery death and/or drowning but managed to limp off the bridge and had a spare nut in my toolbox.

Transfer case in an abandoned lot in the ghetto
engine swap in the same lot

D30 swap on a friends jeep in a pay per hour parking lot in the middle of manchester nh

Cps swap on the side of rt85 in hudson mass. Took me 10 minutes with idiots honking at me. Sorry dude does it look like I can move this thing? F you too!
Cps swap on the side of i81 with a blown trans. Had to make the engine run again after the torque converter blew up so bad it melted the cps, so that we could winch it onto lobsterdmb's trailer.

Control arms swapped in the middle of the woods, trans cooler lines patched in the woods a few weeks later

Ignition switch replaced in the sears parking lot. I was carrying a spare, but not the tools to install it. So I put it in run, park, and started it with a wrench on the solenoid contacts from underneath, drove it to sears, bought the tools, and installed the new switch.

Soldered up holes in radiators in the campground
Fixed rob Mayercik's jeep with a bic lighter, a chapstick, and a utility knife on a trail at rausch after the bulkhead connector developed an intermittent connection.

Dana 30 balljoints and axleshaft replaced in a campground... would have swapped the whole 30 (had a spare with me) but I forgot it had 3.07s in it and wanted to go wheeling again the next day

ive done a complete 4.0 engine swap at my campsite. used a strap slung between 2 trees, a d ring and a winch to hoist everything in and out of place.
