Swaping renix block/head in place of HO?

Wow after about 3hrs of searching I still havent found exactelly what i am looking for. A freind has a 96 zj with 4.0 ho. It has a knock after over heating. He has no cash for a rebuild. I have a Renix complete motor laying around. Can I install the renix block and head but use his intake and exhaust and all the zjs fuel and electrical system. I read some where I should swap in the 96 camshaft so it is matched his computer. I am just trying to help him get back on the road. Thanks agian.

We did a 94 XJ engine swap into a 96 ZJ (grand Cherokee) and discovered that the torque converters and transmissions were different!!! But the old transmission and torque converter from the ZJ worked.

The Renix has a different tooth count on the flywheel (or flex plate) than the HO, and a different CPS (CKP). So you need to use TC and FP/FW off the ZJ. Is it auto or manual?

I am not sure if the HO manifolds will mate to the Renix head, I suspect the Intake manifold is different, in fact I know it is different on the top side where the sensors and rods all connect, but the head side, I don't know for sure. You may find the answer searching the MOD forum. I do know the Renix and HO heads are interchangable on the block side, but I suspect the manifold side is not a simple swap.

There will also be some minor issues like sensor locations, that are different. IIRC we also had to replace the water pump, and related parts from the ZJ engine to get the serpentine belt for AC and power steering set up right, as the ZJ had a larger, different water pump, a different clutch fan pully-bearing setup and the pullys were different. It was a simple parts swap and we used a new water pump to play it safe. The engine mounts from the ZJ had to see used, the renix engine mounts would not fit.

Yeah, it should work Ok.

Little less HP, but I think the PCM can correct enough for the differences that you don't get a CEL.

Be sure and use the manifold gaskets for the ZJ.

If his head is not toasted I would swap the head to your longblock with the manifolds attached., solves all of the sensor/gasket problems and you don't have to deal with the manifolds.

I wouldn't be concerned about changing the cam, it's likely not different enough to make a difference. The biggest difference between Renix and HO cams is some duration timing that compensated for the lack of EGR on the HO motors.

The cam is almost identical. I swapped an 88 remix long clock into a 2000 rig. Threre will be no place to bolt the coil down. I bolted it up by the ac compressor and made a longer wire. You will have to use the later model manifolds flex plate and accessory brackets. The timing cover is a bit different but you can just knock the timing tab. It runs just about the same too maybe more torquey. The dizzy a little different too but no big deal really
