Summer Job?

What would you suggest for a new highschool grad as a second summer job. I currently work at a car parts store(dont plan on leaving anytime soon), and love the discount, but im not getting enough hours, and the pay is alright, but not the best.
I'm lookin to make hopefully a lot of money so i can make the transition to 35's yada yada yada.
What kid of summer jobs did you guys have?

I do tech support but Ive been doing that forever. I also do computer work on the side and charge minimum $50 an hour. But Ive also done hardwood that was fun and you can make good money doing it.

In Cali I don't know, but here you go offshore. Slightly dangerous, but 12 hour days 7 days a week adds up quick. When you get home you do whatever you feel like doing.

Construction or landscaping for a high end company that's always busy. $$$ is in the overtime. If you take all the OT they can through at you without whining or bailing they'll notice and keep you after some of the less dedicated get the axe. You'll be doing grunt stuff, but the pay is usually decent and you'll learn skills you can always use at home.

Er, hmm....
I did the whole military thing and unless you're looking at retarding your career by how ever many years you enlist for, then don't think about it. No offence to any of you (us) who have served, but I could have been in College getting my BS this whole time like my fellow High School buddies/peers. It was also an issue whtat while I served, I wasn't able to continue my education do due all the deployments and training I attended. The skills I gained from the Mil were great... on the streets and such. Shoot, I still feel like Fire Marshal Bill!

To the original poster, if you are looking for a good job for the summer time, please, let me know and I think can get you a $2500/mo job in your area. *I think* my boss may be hiring in the San Ramone area, I'll have to check if you really want me to. You gotta have a clean backround and be pretty active/fit because you're gonna be walking and taking a lot of pictures of the city you live in. at least 5 miles a day. easy.... easy work.

Landscaping, construction, intern, engineer. Engineering seems to be the best so far. I think I'll stick with it for a while. Being an intern was a whole lot of fun though.

A lot of young guys from up here head to Alaska and work the fish proscessing boats, moneys pretty good, the work is long, tedious, and very stinky. I think your too late for this year they generally hire late spring/early summer

True. My roomates in Lafayette did that weekon/weekoff and made bank. You could do that here in California but you wont have to go offshore, just to Bakersfield.

If you're that desparate for money....I'd be looking for anything that paid decent.....

Dont know about out in cali, but out here i'm working for Tyco for the summer as a machine operator. The work is wicked easy, pays pretty well (bout 9.50/hr).....i've got solid 40 hour weeks, with usually about 16 hours OT on the weekends (at time and a half...thats $14.25/hr for those 16 hours)...which equates to a very nice paycheck every week. Only part that's bad is having to be at work at 7am with a 40 minute commute...means i'm up at about 5:30 and on the road by 6:10 at the latest.

If you are interested in staying in the Auto Parts business you should check with the nearby Repair shops. Many would be interested in a part time lot person or even an oil change tech. You would get great experience in another side of the field and learn huge amounts about both cars and the parts customers. I know how hard it is to find a qualified parts person these days and I've found that the best have experienced life from the customer's perspective as well.
