Subwoofer and Amp ?

Ok I am a little confused. My 2 ch alpine amp says it puts out 4ohms bridged and I just bought a JL 10" Sub and the guy at the stereo shop said I needed the 8 ohm sub???? is this right or should I get the 4ohm sub and what harm or sound quality will running a 8 ohm sub on 4ohm output cause.

if its 4 OHMS and a 2 channel, u said its 4oHMs BRIDGED, then its 8 ohms individual channels, just run one channel to one sub and the other channel to the other sub.

I am only running one sub and according to my amp specs bridged is 4ohms and stereo is 2 ohms. Maybe Iam confused about bridged but being bridged is basicaly taking the two channels and making them one correct.

Yeah taking both channels and making them one, is your sub dual voice coil or single voice coil?

I believe single. Because a dual would have 2 sets of input terminals right? mine just has one. I tried going on the JL web site to look that up but it did not say anything about voice coils in the specs. Can ya tell I dont know much about this stuff :laugh3:

Yeah your subwoofer would have 2 sets of posi and negative terminals. Wiring subwoofers is so confusing when you throw in the Ohm.


IF YOU DONT BRIDGE YOUR AMP, EACH CHANNEL WILL BE 8 OHMS SO YOU CAN RUN YOUR SUB TO ONE CHANNEL but you wont have the full power of your amplifier which is kinda like having an extra jeep that doesnt work.

**Generally it makes things easier to run a 4ohm amp to a 4ohm sub, 2ohm amp to a 2ohm sub** so if you havnt purchased it yet thatd be ur best bet

Ya thats kinda what I was thinking. I did already buy the sub, thats why I was asking because it only sounds good at low volume, once you get to almost half volume it loses its low end and almost pops. So then I started thinking ohms :dunno:
