Strange Oil Leak

Did some searching and got a couple ideas....just wanted to get some more input before I tackle the job.

Background is a 99 4.0/AW4 with 113K on it. Been chasing the typical oil leaks since I bought it almost 4 years ago....did the valve cover gasket 2 years ago and it's A-OK as of now, and the oil filter adaptor o-rings last summer....so far they're holding up well too.

The problem i'm having now is I believe because of the rear main...but it's kind of confusing me. I can run it down the highway all day long and generally be OK. However if the outside temperature is above say 60-65 and I get caught in traffic long enough to make the electric fan kick on and off a couple of times to cool the Jeep off, the Jeep begins to leak oil from what looks like the rear main. I can usually smell it hitting the exhaust, and when I get to where im going it will usually leave a few drops on the ground. If I really get stuck in a lot of traffic and get back up to speed, the minute I take my foot off the gas and begin to coast it really starts leaking some oil (enough to make some nice blue smoke behind me).

My question is....why only when it's hot? Like I said I can go down the highway with it 100* outside with no real problems other than the tranny pan is a little wet....get stuck in traffic on the highway, or do a lot of running around town in stop and go and it begins to leak. I do about 90-95% highway travel with trips that are generally no less than 20-25 miles one way....but traffic on Charlotte highways gets backed up real quick...and its no fun leaking oil in traffic.

This generally isn't a problem in the winter with colder temps...only in the hot summer months.

:eeks1: The only time my seal seems to leak is in hot weather, after being in heavy traffic.I suspect it's because the oil thins out & spends a lot of time against the the back of the pan from the acceleration of stop & go traffic. It's a typical 4.0 problem. You've fixed the 2 easy oil leaks, now eventually you'll have to fix the hard one.

Yeah I know....working 7 days a week isn't going to make this an easy one...
