Steering Gear Box "Block"?

1) Nope
2) Only able to figure out a member when it's displayed under their handle.
3) I.E. used at almost the end of a sentence(s)(?), i.e., as an example to further expound upon an idea, subject, or to give a technical example. Are you a freak'in English Major, lol. (btw: Capitalized i.e. [which I do not usually ever use when attempting to give an example], is to me to stand for that Microsoft Internet Explorer, i.e., I.E. browser which is crap--I use a different browser engine, i.e., OPERA). So yes, I do use i.e., not I.E., lol, mostly.
4) Thanks again for the 'photobucket' trip.., but does not NAXJA provide the same function, or does this site only go half way, i.e., we can only stick pics elsewheres, rather than in our postings? Seems this is the second, or third time I've asked for such clarification.
5) Fifth, numero cinco, i.e., #V: Have you not looked at the picture one of our brothers posted in this thread? Do you not look before you leap off of that big rock with your XJ? What me get angry, lol. NOT! Hell, I've got brown, and black bears in my yard, and desperados running around. I let my .44 magnum get angry. Haven't shot my XJ block yet, though, so I guess I don't get that angry, lol. Its not exactly wedge shaped. It has multiple facets. Just how in the world do you see it to somehow 'deflect' energy when it's lined up to not deflect energy, but to contribute it by it's very alignment, i.e., from a solid, next to said solid, and again next to another solid?

'Dern it.., I was hoping your post, Techno 1154, would be the answers to my prayers on just what the validity of the 'block' was all about.., but you are funny too. If it 'twernt for the humor on this site, I'd go mad. Oh, oh, madman with gun.., will travel. (Just kidd'in--I'm in no way interested in the lower 48, [we are doomed enough up here]).

Really? I cannot upload to NAXJA, and then to a post I participate in; here at NAXJA?

No. NAXJA is a forum, not a photo hosting site. Photobucket, ImageShack etc. are image hosting sites, not forums. Kind of like Jeeps are not Subarus, like that don't ya know.

1)

I let my .44 magnum get angry.

Whoa big fella...this is a family forum.

I'm in no way interested in the lower 48

Phew!! If you want to vent, rant or otherwise go freaking nuts, try Pirate 4x4.

AND as to the original question...ahh, forget it!!

Thanks ParadiseXJ for the photo tips. Man, are you kidding? Don't you know English humor when you see/hear it. Talk about sensitive. The thing was to inform fellow poster, that I am not upset about his inquiry as to his points. Guess some just can't get it. Oh Well, never-the-less, I will try to keep to a self made promise to not ever, ever, bring up any ramifications to; GOD, Country, Guns, or the Bible to this so-called family forum where some dogs have mouths as filthy as sailers on drunken shore leave. Some family forum.., i.e., have not seen you police them!!!!! Funny how the liberals are such control freaks, i.e., their way, or no way, let 'em swear, har, har. Never thought of you as the brain police, but I get it. Paradise Californica gets terribly hot, and brains dry up, (been there). SO, I will shoot straight with kindly niceness. HOWEVER, I did not start it, just responding, to several points in question, lol, but am willing to finish it, not with macho outbursts, but with my promise, to simply put my tail between my legs, and stay on my topic.., unlike others. So, don't piss me off too much with such unnecessary scolding, or I will spend my next membership fees instead to another Cherokee site, and know what.., I will not even bother to look back.

SO: Mr. ParadiseXJ, my first NAXJA friend, ON TOPIC: just what does the 'block' do, provide, that requires it to be there in the first place. I have read speculations, but am not convinced by them as of yet. Are you? Why are you even bothering to read this thread if you do not participate with the so-called required, (sans the alleged rant--as per what qualifies as your mis-understood interpretation IMHO), diplomatic family-only language of technical expertise focus necessary, and semi-thusly required to solve the issue? IF your BP has gone up.., take a break, have some iced tea. I swear that these XJ problems/fixes/modifications have worn out, or tired out some members, non-members, guests, etc., to the point of no return. Get it?

1 - Would you like to know how or are you happy with your current method? I'd be more than happy to inform you. It would make your posts much more reader friendly.

2 - Paid members' names are in Red. None paid users' names are in Black.

3 - I know what it means. You use the i.e. more than most use a comma. I hate Internet Explorer as well. Your peculiar vernacular is quite wordy and difficult to read at times but I guess that's just you. I have a small brain. Use small words.

4 - Any photo on the web that is not copy righted can be posted into your post. Right click the photo, click "copy url", then click the picture icon above your post (Yellow and brown mountains button). Paste the URL. If your URL is correct the image will appear in your post.

5 - Yes, I looked at the picture. No, I don't look before I "leap off of that big rock with my XJ?" That takes half the fun out of it. A 2 dimensional diagram doesn't do the part justice. When you figure out how to post a picture we'll try to please your thirst for knowledge.

Had a 96 4 door I rolled. We had a 2dr XJ growing up, so I was partial to them.
87 is the first acceptable year of the XJ (firewall dent for 4.0) I ended up with an 87, because the shell was only $80. Not only is the 2 Dr weaker, I cut a big honkin hole in the roof, so a cage has been installed.

99 is the group consensus on"best year", I was more trying to illustrate that it doesn't so much matter what the jeep came with, but what you make of it.

Yes, the 8.8 came with discs, and the 96 had the good master/booster combo.
The leather ZJ seats were back during C4C, $38 for the pair.

And as a former drunken sailor on shore leave, leave us outta this

Lowrange2--Thanks for your helpfulness.
1) Multi-quote button located on lower left? Where is the Single-quote button...:eyes: Whoops: Hmmm, I saw some button that said 'quote' before I got to here, but cannot see it now.
2) Red--right! Black--left!
3) "...peculiar vernacular..." lol, those aren't sm. words, like that's 7 syllables just for two!
4) I understand the copy right/fair use trip, but "Any photo on the web"(?)... I was just beginning to grok the idea, the fact that I could only download to here from say; PhotoBucket, or some such. Does not make sense to me now. I can use the VISTA OS "Snipping Tool", snip an image, place it into one of my files. NAXJA's has an elsewheres place to up/download an image from my OS to some 'album', but... Hmmm. Well, my best bet so far are those recommendations to go to PhotoBucket, etc. Strapped for time right now. However, I do not see a brown/yellow mountain icon above where I am typing. I see a couple of overlapped bluish 'A's icon with a red 'X' going through them, next to a box with the word "Fonts" in it.
5) So very, very thirsty... 'gotta go fix up a cup of Organic coffee bean Java.., oh yeah, thirsty for knowlege, that's it.

Hey Navy Man Souske, what is it when an aircraft is flying at you over water with red light left, green light right on the wing tips? Tell us; does the indent in your '87 firewall make it easier for you to access the CPS, or is your engine further back into it? Yeah, I've read from various forums that '99 is more, or less sound. Alas, my '89 will have to do. Lot of glare/black ice these night drives lately. Happy to have CIBIE's. C4C was a bad joke around here at the end of the road on the N.American Continent. Torqued out all the motor heads, and the rest of us of not being able to easily obtain parted-out parts. Really envy, in a way, 'ya all with all the junkyards within easy reach. (Ak. is 1/5th the size of the Contiguous States, with a population of that of Fresno, Calif.). I've got to go about 500 miles round trip to play.

ParadiseXJ--where'd you go? See? I've cleaned up my act, and did not even further insult drunken sailers, lol!

Well, thanks for all of the patience given this old Air Rescue Man, ('66--'70).., I will attempt, (as a techno-peasant), to get an image into this thread in the next few days, by sorting through item #4, above, but hopefully someone will figure out an OEM technical reasoning behind the use of; 'block', and 'bolt'.:patriot:

A helo flying backwards?

The dent doesn't make maintence easier, it just saved me from habing to modify the firewall to get a 4.0 in there. Your 89 will have the same dent, prior to 87 there was no dent as only the 2.5, and 2.8(and some small diesels) were being used then, and the extra clearance was unnneccesary.

The multi quote button is just to the right of the quote button. Select the posts you want to quote and on the final one, use the quote button.

Had to look, lol, and there you are. Good guess! The old manuals discussed enemy planes flying upside down to confuse ship watch.

So, I take it the 'quote' buttons work mostly in conjunction with the 'Quick Reply' field, not useful after using the "Post Reply" button, a different typing field, right?

Be back tomorrow, thanks.

This is the button. Ignore the right side.

#30 is the "block" which mounts on the front frame cross rail, #31 is a "bolt" that goes up, introduced, into the front frame cross rail, connecting "block" solidly upon the front frame cross rail, and "block" is articulated by being shaped to correctly fit on the front frame cross rail, and somewhat against steering box's cylinder housing w/nut. At this time I cannot verify if the "block" is snug against the steering gear box.

The mystery remains. Storm took out my land line.., lol, Happy New Year all.

The block on mine was within 1/8" of touching. Being a design engineer, the fact that it is a wedge leads me to believe it it meant to deflect something. Automotive engineers don't add things that are not needed in their minds. If it were for ballast in order to change a resonance point, there would be no need to conform to the steering gear, or to make it any more fancy than a block of pot metal.

What the heck is part#11?
Also what kind of steering gearbox is that? Never seen one like that, and on all my XJ boxes all the mounting holes were threaded.

Maybe the block is to avoid excessive deformation of the crossmember in case of a hard yank on the tow hooks. My 87 was a forestry vehicle in its former life, and likely had tow hooks, it had the block.
My 96 did not have tow hooks, and did not have the block.

Heck, maybe they were left over from the fullsize waggys, and it was cheaper to put the leftovers in early XJ's, vs. buy a dumpster to put them in

My bare bones 85 with no power steering had it, so did the 88 with power steering. I scratched my head and ended up throwing it out when I went with a Durango Box.

My earlier training was in; Mechanical, Technical, and Architectural engineering.., and the only thing I can figure out, (without any substantial fact), is that the 'block' might be there to prevent gear box stuff from falling out, lol, or acted as a guide jig to insure positive x/y/z OEM factory fittment between gear box, and front frame crossmember. IF those two oblique ideas are faulty, don't blame me.., it's made me crazy trying to figure out whatever it is. Like I have stated.., I have tossed IT into my spare parts bin.

One thing more, it would be a great place to hide depleted unranium, as no one seems to know exactly what it's purpose is, and back it with an 'ah-ha' moment.
