Can I replace my starter in my 92 xj, 4.0 with any 4.0 starter from a wrangler, cherokee or grand cherokee up to 01? Thanks

You can use the starter out of any 4.0 liter from 1987 (not sure, might be 88) up to 1998. From 1999 and up, the starter is different.

I've confirmed this previously with my starter house - 1987-2001 starters on XJ/MJ OK, and probably 1987-2005/6/7 as well.

Ah, well I wasnt sure as the part #s for the OEM replacements change for 1999+ XJs, so I thought it was a different starter. Maybe it is just made by a different company

Ayuh. Apparently, all the changes to the 4.0 block over the years were strictly internal - NVH upgrades, main girdle, and cylinder wall thickness changes. The external casting stayed the same - the 2005 4.0 probably still has the unmachined boss for the RENIX knock sensor!
