Starter issue

I've been having minor starter issues now for a couple of months. Nothing too serious, just a sticky solenoid. I just finally got tired of crawling under it to whack the starter with a hammer every time it acted up. So I get it into the garage today and crawl under there to pull out the old starter...and...I could have swore these 4.0's had 2 bolts holding the starter in. But, somewhere along the way in the past 25 years and 220k miles the upper bolt decided to go it's separate way. I am a little curious how long it's been missing though. The new starter spins things much quicker than the old one, and it has 2 bolts holding it in. :gee:

Nice! always nice to find out something like that...

I'm just glad I found it when I was changing the starter in my garage. Not in the middle of some trail, like Swamp or Rubicon, with the starter hanging by the wires and no bolts. That might have been embarrassing. :D

Imagine a one-upper story here.
This happened to me last week. Had the jeep packed for camping and it decided to finally crap out as I tried to leave the house. Tried to wack the starter and the whole thing "flopped" about 45 degrees .... Same thing, the starter was hanging by a single bolt, just barely. Super glad it happened then and not AT the pinnacles. A trip to O'Reilly's and an hour later I had a new starter and some new bolts, and we were on our way.

Recently replaced my starter. It only had one bolt. Tried several bolts in the lower hole, that threads to the bell housing. I cannot for the life of me, find the correct size bolt and thread. Ive got a 3/8" bolt in there now...that won't crank down tight. I put some lock tight on it and am hoping this one don't fall out, until I can find the correct bolt for the lower hole. Anyone know what the correct bolt sizes are for an 01' 4.0 auto trans XJ? They are both different in diameter and length.
