squeaky belt

I'm having the same problem with my 87 MJ The only difference with mine is that it all started with replacing the PS pump. I replaced the water pump both idler pullies and the thermostat because it wouldn't warm up past 140 deg after the new h2o pump. A buddy barrowed a belt tension gauge and I had it way too loose but tightening it didn't eliminate the noise. I'm checking the pullies with a strait edge tomorrow at the suggestion of a freind to make sure the pulley went on the shaft of the P.S. pump the correct amount so the allignment between the pullies is good. I hope you guys come up with a fix so I can try it on my truck.

If it happened just after the pump and you're sure the belt is tight enough I'd say your friend has a very good point about the power steering pump pulley not quite being right, I got lucky when I did mine.

Also - Check the harmonic balance (both of you!), make sure it's lined up well with the rest of the pulleys, also make sure it's not wobbling when the engine is running. It is common for the rubber that holds the pulley portion to the frame to rot out and cause the pulley to separate and move.

i seem to also have a squeaky belt nowadays and my water pump was also just done......IT MUST BE A CONSPIRACY

Just an update. I re alligned the pullys (the PS pump pully was off) but it didn't help. Someone else posted on the O&M board and said he cured it by applying surf wax to the smooth side of the belt. I'm not quite desperate enough to try that yet but pretty close.

Did you measure the tension? Get the krikit tension meter and make sure that you're not too loose or too tight.

Yes I measured it and I think I may have used your Kriket, XJonny barrowed it to help me eliminate belt tention as a cause of the noise. My next effortmay be to try another PS pump because it seems to be coming from that area.

PS? Maybe.... also how's your water pump? When it's sitting cold with the ignition off, see if you can wobble any of the pulleys with your hands.
