I have a 92 XJ with an np231j, 4.0, automatic.
When I got the Jeep the transfer case was shot making the vehicle undrivable. I ended up purchasing a replacement rebuilt and my mechanic installed it.
Shortly after that I noticed that my speedometer gear would work intermittently. Everything else on the dash works fine. I don't know if it had this issue prior to the transfer case swap as it was not running when I bought it.
I looked at the speedometer gear, it was a short shaft and with a 92, I have a mechanical speedometer so I figured I'd just needed a long shaft.
Fast forward about 4 years and I installed the long shaft gear, and it worked fine for like a day and then the intermittent issue came back.
Ideas?
