Anyone here in South Texas? Right now there's a really big ring around the moon. It's a perfect circle, probably about the length of 50 moons diameter. Anyone know what the name of this kind of thing is? It's really beautiful, I wish my digital camera could zoom out enough to take a good picture. I don't find many things to be beautiful in life, but I must say that i'm pleased with this.
Yeah, I guess you could call it a halo. This "halo" is monstrous. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Some people it means the next day will be windy, but they've never seen anything this huge. Monster wind storm?
I'm in SE Texas, but it's been overcast here. I just now stepped outside. I can see the moon and some stars, but there are too many low altitude clouds. I'm not going to see a halo, even if there is one. I saw one once back in my high school days. I was driving home from a buddy's house around 1 or 2 am and realized what was happening when I was out on a county road, with nobody else around. I got out to look at it and was mesmerized for at least a half hour. The ring was a 360* rainbow with full spectrum color. The space inside the ring appeared clear with stars around the moon. Outside the ring a diffuse white glow faded out from the ring toward the horizon. The full effect covered half the sky. I figured it was radioactive fallout or something. When I finally got home I woke up my folks to see it and my dad's like, "Huh. Lunar halo." I'm like, "You've seen this before?" He's like, "High altitude ice crystals." He went back to bed. Within an hour some clouds moved in and and that was the end of it.
I haven't seen one since that one night. Some day I hope to see it again.
