Something that grinds my nerves

So, the other day at work (I work in a grocery store), a guy comes up to my counter and wants to buy shrimp. He points and makes a grunt. So, I ask, "You want one pound of white shrimp?". He nods after holding up his pointer finger.

The next thing he does is pull out a debit looking card, but its not a debit card, its an EBT food stamp card. He then proceeded to ask me if he can pay for the shrimp with his food stamps. Mind you, these shrimp are $7.99 per pound. When I said that he could, he holds up two fingers and says, "Two pounds".

I'm thinking, WTF? This dude is eating shrimp on tax dollars when I'm eating peanut-effing-butter sandwiches because I don't have anything to cook at home.

After that "incident", I told my butcher about it and he told me when he worked at another store, freakin' indians would come in and buy lobster tails, shrimp, scallops, tenderloin, porterhouse and a whole bunch of expensive meat with their EBT cards that tax payers are giving them.

Has anybody else come across similar things? It just pisses me off to see these people (the shrimp guy didn't even speak English...) using their EBT cards for luxuries when thats not what they were intended for. They should be able to buy milk, bread and maybe some ground beef, not effing shrimp!

Why does the government of WA persist in letting this happen unmonitored?

AHHHHHHHH!:gonnablow:gonnablow:gonnablow:explosion

I once watched a lady go ballistic and let out scream you could hear through the whole store, when the cashier told her she couldn't buy booze with food stamps. Out of curiosity I followed her out and watched her climb into her Caddy.
A couple of weeks later saw her in the parking lot next to my bank, watched her unloading about half a dozen kids, all looked roughly about the same age and watched her march them into the welfare office.

Had an operation on my leg at the VA, they had to redo some work I had done in the military. After a few months, things got really desperate, I'd run out of stuff to sell and was getting really hungry. Swallowed my pride and thumbed to the welfare office with my full leg cast and was told they couldn't help me.
Got to admit though things weren't all bad, the VA sent out a cute little home nurse to help me out a couple of days a week, I really looked forward to bath days.
Part 2
Finally got a check from some agency and took it down to the super market to buy groceries, was informed store policy, was not to cash welfare checks. Said OK, went into the market and loaded up a shopping cart and wheeled it out through the back, just before the loading dock exit I was stopped by a stock boy and asked what I was doing. Told him cast or no cast, it would be extremely unhealthy for him to not just turn away and walk off and forget he ever saw me. I guess I convinced him, I never heard another word about it.
Sometimes you get so frustrated you just say fawk it.

Yes, this irritates me also. There are so many people living off the state in Florence that I will not go to a store anytime between the 1st of the month and the 4th.

As far as I know the state of South Carolina does put limitations on the food purchases someone on welfare can make. I was unfortunately in a Walmart around the 1st of the month behind a family paying for food with EBT and the cashier told her that she could not buy boneless skinless chicken breast with EBT. She said they could buy other chicken just not the premium stuff. I don't know if this particular situation is accurate but if they do regulate what is available for purchase, I think that is very cool.

I was stationed in Rapid City, SD for 3 years. Heavy Indian population there...

The grocery stores there sold alcohol and you'd see people buying up tons of liquor/beer with their food stamp cards, even though I'm pretty sure that wasn't legal....but they always had a friend who worked there who would manually input the sale as something other than what they were really buying....

The other thing that got me was one day, I was in line behind a couple who probably bought $150 in groceries, on their food stamp card. I only had one thing to buy, so I was pretty quick to get out in the parking lot....

...where I saw them getting into a brand new Corvette....

I was at the store this weekend, when a lady dressed in all the nike gear, with manicured nails paid with a "stamp card" went out and got into a new (paper plates) dodge van, and gave me the stink eye as I got in my '96 beater toyota truck. I'm all for "helpin" a bit, however, I believe there should be some conditions for stamp tramps, ie. you shouldn't be allowed to make big ticket purchases, nor should your assets total a certain amount.

Unfortunately there are a million stories like this on a daily basis. On the rare occasion that I wander into Walmart I always end up in line behind a member of the entitlement class with a cart piled high with meat and other expensive stuff. Then she'll pay for the covered items with her EBT card and pull a wad of bills out and peel off a hundred to pay for the rest. Then she'll waddle her butt out to one of the 47 full handicapped parking spots and climb into her Exclade or Navrigator. If it's not her then it's the family of tweakers with three carts full of crap who try to pay with a hand full of stolen credit cards or bad checks.

What's wrong with someone buying food with food stamps?

This is the best you can do? I expected way more of a smart ass comment....or a good story.

I KNOW you have at least 5 :D

Yeah man, this stuff pisses me off too. Theres too many lazy ass people feeding off the rest of us who work hard for our money. I was on craigslist a few months back lookin through the rants and raves section, and there were a few people "bragging" about how they are on welfare, live in secion 8 housing, but paid cash for a new iphone and macbook cuz of their "under the table" job. Its messed up man.

The problem is that for every 5 you see beating the system there are 1 or 2 that you don't see that really need it, when they tighten it up those 5 still figure out how game the system and the 1 or 2 that need it get screwed.

Dam, that New Jersey sloppy joe and Mediterranean potato salad were good..

there is a track of "section 8" (welfare) housing apartments next to my shop, the parking lot is full of escalades, BMWs, lincoln navigators... all with big rims. i was talking to onw of the guys hanging out outside one day asking where he worked, and he said "work? why? i get a check for 5,000 the first of every month.. i aint workin for nothin". thats almost TWICE what im pulling in working full time. something wrong there.

Yep, there's some "low-income/welfare" housing here in this tiny town - and in the parking lot there are at least 3 H2s....WTF...

Up here, people will grow thier own food in gardens, then use food stamps for crab legs and filet mignon

I personally drive a nice vehicle live in a nice house and stay broke however my stepsister on the other hand (no Zac I have not) recieves like 650.00 a month in food stamps no welfare just stamps, so one a month I go get her card spend about 300.00 dollars on it and give her bout 150.00 to 200.00 cash for it. I figure, 1) I get more for my money and 2) she now has money to buy diapers for my nephew and clothes for him. This way we both win
