Had to pull my distributor today to fix an oil leak. Found this inside.

It's suppose to look like this.

Now the confusing part isn't so much how it got this way (I'm wondering that too) but more, how the .... was my jeep still running like this, and running good no less.

It's a renix.. I have not experienced that though.

This was still running??? Did you find the missing peice of the metal spring/strip down in the base of the distributor?
Kinda amazing, maybe a malfunctioning coil?

No Jeremy, HO.

Yes I found a few chard remains of what I think might have been the pin from the cap and the rest of the spring.

I was really just amazed that it was running and running really good want even missing, and plenty of power!

my MJ looked similar at the first tuneupafter i bought it. looks like your coil is firing a little hot there lol

Must have been that the spring strip contact thingy was just wedged into place and fell off when you pulled the cap. Did you feel or hear it fall?

Makes you wonder how important it is to change the distributor cap at routine tune ups. Often wondered why I was trashing what visibly looked OK, especially now if they can run in this bad of shape.

I don't think it was stuck in place, I only found burned up dust inside. No solid pieces of the remains, it was burned to nothing on both the cap and the rotor. The whole area where the pin should have been was burned up.

Just replace the cap and rotor.

Hoodie, yeah I think that is what happened or something similar. When I put the engine in about a month ago everything was new. I'm not sure what happened to the pin maybe it was loose and the arc melted it first then just kept going. I dunno.

Old man, I had to change the whole dizzy. The tab that locates it to the block was broken off by someone before me, it wasn't holding pressure on the sealing washer and was dumping oil out all over the side of the engine, starter and exhaust.
