the big jeep. 99 4.0 dana 30 alloy axles and 4.10s. brakes that are less than 20XXX miles old.

ok so last week i was driving and noticed the stoppage of my jeep was acting odd. pulling to one side ect... smelt the burnt brake smell. noticed that i didn't roll backwards on hills.... yea....

well the front right wheel was almost locked up.
i tore it apart in a parking lot and cleaned everything put it back together and it all worked as it should . i was baffeld as to what caused it, and figured it was the dirt and mud caked from the last outing.

well she did it again tonight. i got the big girl home and let the brakes cool off.

ill attack it tomorrow but id like to know what yall think.

any wisdom?

hey man. my driver's side front locked up on me about a week ago. the smell was awful. i had to replace the whole caliper. now my brakes work fine. replacing the caliper was one of the easiest things i've ever replaced on my jeep.

I JUST replaced both calipers on both of my jeeps for this same reason. There really isnt much else you can do for a long term fix. If you clean it, it will help, but the pistons in the caliper are getting stuck.

On my wifes XJ, it was getting bad. I replaced the whole caliper on both sides, including pads and rotors since they were shot.

On my XJ I got away with just doing the caliper and pads.

Its an easy fix really, and not that expensive. I paid right at $45.00 per caliper, and that included new pads. If your pads are good, you can get them for cheaper. Install, bleed and be on your way.

I've also had to replace brake lines on one Chrysler I had. That solved the problem. I guess the lines were old and colapsed.

Another vote for a stuck caliper. Just had a guy come into work last night with the pads and rotor off of a Dodge Ram...guy wanted me to warranty him some new pads because the inner pad had absolutely zero rubber left and trashed the inside of his rotor. I told him the caliper was probably sticking on his truck. The rotor got hot enough that it actually broke a chunk of it off.

just put in a new caliper on my passenger side...bleeder screw stripped out while doing the breaks. 10 minutues to pick it up and only cost me 18 bux...thats not bad at all. my brake pads are still good so i didnt have to replace...

i narrowed it to the caliper and ill be changing it in like 15 min lol thanks for the responses guys!

well new caliper is on and she rolls and stops as advertised

So where do we get new calipers? Mine have that worn groove from the pads sliding back and forth....

well my old pads blued the rotor a little but no grooves in it. i got mine at the zone and turned the old one in. 18 bucks. hells yea

Had the same issue last week and bought new calipers at Pep Boys for 18 bucks. But am now having an issue with air I think... Take a look at my other posting this morning and if anyone could help it would be awesome.
