California is looking to get all of this money, and do what with it? My taxes are probably still going to go up, and we'll end up paying for it anyhow (if and when anyone buys a new car... Why not just sue the fuel refiners, so we can ALL pay?)

Damn Bill Lockyer!

thats BS...its retarded lawsuits like that which start others like it....i think one of the best was the lady that droped her cup of coffe on her....did you get that...she drop it on her self and sued...got big $$$$....i just want some kick azz trails closer to dallas...who do i threat for a playg ground closer to me for my XJ?????

Do we spend a ton of money dealing with global climate change impacts?

Yes.

Are automobiles solely to blame?

Not even close.

Why not sue individual auto owners as well?

Why not sue Briggs & Stratton, Bombardier (Evinrude & Johnson,) Brunswick (Mercury Marine,) John Deere, Caterpillar, Cummins, Textron (Homelite,) etc. Noone accounts for the non-automotive greenhouse gas sources. Its absurd! Only in Cali!:passgas:

Yet another shake-down by the state of Kalifornia. How do these lunatics keep getting elected???All you "normal" Kalifornians need to revolt.

Can we vote Kalifornia off the island and let them be their own little country??:D

I would, but the odds would be something like a few dozen against a few million. Revolt? Need more support, first...

While we might spend millions in dealing with pollution, why don't they just ask us for the money up front? It's things like this that make me end up thinking "highway robbery" - California can sue the automakers, but it's people (nationwide, if not worldwide!) that are going to end up paying for it all. I'd be only mildly surprised, if CA managed to win, if those six automakers would just stop doing business here. I'm also mildly surprised that more of that hasn't been going on already (no longer doing business, not silly lawsuits...)

If you want to do something useful, go after motorcycles, Diesels, and small engines - since they aren't subject to emissions controls. They've already banned personal watercraft with two-stroke engines in quite a few places, so keep going! Ban all two-stroke engines (which would take care of those asinine little scooters, leaf blowers, and such) or just tax the Hell out of them, and see what that does. Start putting "Emissions Cost Surcharges" on large Diesel engines, and then watch the cost of truck freight go up.

Hell, why not jet aeroplanes? They burn kerosene (essentially,) but they're nasty on startup, and what do you think contrails are? Smog Airliners!

I'm not saying that this isn't a problem - it is. What I'm trying to say is that this is going about the problem all wrong. I'm not sure about a solution just yet - but I am sure that this isn't one...

Actually the whole thing is lawyers supporting lawyers, the only money changing hands will be in billing hours from the lawyers who work for both the state and auto manufacturers.
My solution could be insituted in about 3 days and would involve mining the st andreas fault with 200+ 59 megaton nukes and create a new west coast shoreline some thursday nite at 0300. We'd solve a multitude of problems from gangs to illegal aliens and put a big dent in the lawyer population... not to mention reducing the US nuclear arms arsenal.. The plus side would be alot less bleeding heart liberals, a boon to the realestate industry for new ocean front development, all that new construction to replace new sea ports and on and on :scottm:

I just found the same article via slashdot and was about to post it here, 5-90 beat me by an hour.

No shit! My first thought was WTF are those guys smoking down there? :D

Is 'Global Warming' ('global climate change' is a far more accurate description) occuring? Very likely.

Is it caused by increased atmostpheric greenhouse gases? More than likely.

Are we to blame for it? Jury is still out on this, but it's looking more and more like we are at least partly to blame.

Soo ... the 'solution' is to sue a bunch car manufacturers? Note to CA legislature: Please cease all respiration immediately, to save the oxygen for those of us that use rational thought to make decisions, and deacrease your contribution to atmospheric CO2 levels at the same time. Thanks!

are you selling outboard bowling balls?

I'll take a dozen!

California should start by suing China first. China by far right now is leading the world in global expansion in industrial markets.
I think California should do us all a favor and start sending lawyers over to china to file suit, right now!
The rest of us can wait untill China responds, and plan accordingly.

that can't work since they don't have to abide by our emissions or laws etc... and we are still the largest polluter last time I checked, some of the worse being particle matter 2.5 and 10
as well as methane and carbon(the usual suspects)

whether it inconviences a person or not I think everyone should be aware of global warming... we are the only planet that contains life as far as we know, yet we would threaten our own existance so we can move about the land a little faster or to be a little lazy...thats some bold moves for short term gains if you ask me...sure a little money here and there, or more power to show off with and build your ego up...but really it comes back to haunt you eventually and if it doesn't then your kids will get to suffer and they haven't done anything FOR GOD SAKES MAN THE CHILDREN THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN!!!!! (*JEsus he has a GUN!*) sir...don't do anything rash...lets just talk about this and work it out, I promise everythings going to be A ok...just put the gun down and come off the ledge...

NOOOO I was born with three nipples...Oh the humanity, what a world what a world...(*melts*)

pow pow pow *screaming in background* viva la revolution!Hasta :lecture: :piratefla :gee: :dunce:

That's pretty funny for a guy who makes his living servicing a product that was invented, and to this day is refined, in the area you'd like to send into the Pacific.

California is the single largest consumer market in the US, and the largest state for automobile sales. If you think auto manufacturers are going to shrug off CA, you're on crack. The void would be filled very quickly by a company producing an environmentally friendly product (take a look at Honda sales in the state).

The simple fact is that Lockyer feels he can do this because he has teh support of the populace that lives here. Politicians may seem whacky some times, but they ALWAYS do things that their internal polling and focus groups tells them will get them votes.

Man, listening to these armchair retired generals just gets my nads. Whats the difference between a politican and a general....nothing, anyone above an O6 is a $%$## politician...vetted and confirmed by elected politicans and part of the political network.
Because they are a retired 'general officer' they are an expert, BS. If you want a real 'read' on whats going on ask the sgts and captains, lt's and captains even, they know whats what and don't hold back any punches by giving politically correct answers, majors and LTCOL's are questionable as they are headed up the politcal ladder. Just had to vent after listening to some talking head O7 spew the party line pie in the sky on CNN...

Rich, thanks for proving that you don't have to be above an O6 to have retarded ideas.

Actually the first PC's designed and built by IBM were all done in Florida not calif. Actually the design was done in NY state at an IBM research center.
IBM's RISC processors were all built in New Hampshire which was where the RS6000 was born and it as well as many IBM products were refined in Austin texas. Calif had very little to do with the PC in it's early years. Now if you're talking Networking, well, thats a different story.
Calif is also the largest consumer of gasoline, gasoline equals taxes, cut gasoline consumption and tax revenues go down, big time down.
I'm sure that if a politican came up with a way to award every one of their constituants with a million dollars they'd jump at that too with no consideration as to where it was going to come from either and I'm sure their polls would be able to justify it too.
GM had an opportunity to further their electrics but blew it, makes me wonder why.
Kinda like smoking, the tabacco industry thru scientifc research has managed to DOUBLE the nicotine content in cigarettes while promoting NO smoking advertisement and web sites, they make it even MORE addictive than it was...
Just my take on it...

of all the stupid things I noticed in that article, the closing sentence just put the cherry on top.

Carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases have been linked to global warming.

huh? No kidding.
