The title of this threw me off cause I thought it was about something else...
After the first couple of posts, my guess is the pin that holds the spider gears in has either lost the bolt that keeps it from moving or has broke and one end is back out. If you keep driving it, you will be replacing the ring and pinion because its hitting the pinion with the clunk.

yep, this is exactly what happened to me. My cross pin bolt backed out and the cross pin slid out of the carrier and split in half. Destroyed the ring and pinion.
