So Cal desert rats

I have been noticing decreased MPG going back almost to when I bought by XJ. I was getting 18-20 but now I have been getting 12-15. The only thing that I had changed on the motor was my homebrew K&N cone airfilter. I dropped back in the stock air box and a good old fashioned paper filter and WOW! On the way to work w/ my AC cranking I was getting 18-20 MPG. As an added benefit I noticed my vacuum boost went from -10 to -15, which has helped with my low vacuum issues. So what I am getting at is don't waste your time on the air intake, keep it stock, works great. Plus with all the sand and dirt out here I think the paper filter is better and cheaper to replace.

Scott, sound like you have been busy! Can't wait to get out and watch you tear it up again! :)

Paul, are you into desert racing? You axle is pretty beefed up already! Is that kind of mod necessary if you just want to go crawl around? I am looking forward to seeing the finished product!

LOL. Some would agree and some won't.I use the stock box an filter now. Mine is also getting about 20 MPG, makes it nice when we do the long all day runs to Big Bear and Johnson Valley

When traffic in the washes allow, We Haul Ass. :D Or any semi flat dirt road, though there is not many granite nasties lurking their. :o But given the alternative, I don't mind another project. Took Me two Years to get the disk brakes on. :laugh2: I buy when I can.
But to Me it seems that is My weak link on the front. When I have found submerged rocks it's been buried in sand. Darn near had to change My diaper after an impact on the front diff cover, sounded & felt like I hit a fire plug.

HOLY CHIT.I just went for a drive in my jeep:D.The steering is SO MUCH BETTER with the steering stabilizer on it.This is a stock one too.I am talking day & night. Now i just need to get the air right in my tires again and i won't look like a drunk going down the road.LOL.I can't find my paper with the pressures i wrote down for it.

DUDE, STFU..Thats just bad JOJO there. We don't talk that way son.LOL.I would truss mine if i went with bigger tires, which i plan on here soon. The stress we put on the front axle is alot, so yes a truss is a good thing.

I'll need to get brad to come out here an talk to me about it.Know what i mean.SHHHHH, don't say it here.

Nice glad your hard work was a success! Sorry Scott, I ll nock on wood for you. LOL! Bigger is always better, go big or go home!......Speaking of that, I found a craigslist posting for a guy selling a 5.5 RE lift. I called him up just to see if he had any upgraded stuff for mine, well he basically said if I gave him my 3in I could take his 5.5in......hmmmm! :) It sounds like a lot of work to swap lifts on vehicles :/ but for the price of free, I am wondering how I could turn that down. I am waiting on pics to confirm he has what he says he has. I might need to solicit help/tools/etc this next week. The guy lives in hemet and says he doesn't even know how to do an oil change. Just my luck!

I think some do allow too much air for a stock engine, but would work OK with a stroker (K&N). Some are engineered for the stock engine, and work pretty well. Nothing wrong with the stock airbox.

This is what I have now, I replaced a K&N setup. The lower end power is back that it lost with more CFM's.

OK folks, WE got a PLAN for next weekend. We have it laid out so nice it would make you sick.Check it out. Were meeting at 8/8:30 in P Town.LOL.Then we PUNT from there. We should have a great time, blind leading the blind.Got to love it.

Nope, mine. Had to remove and put it up on the work bench to do the repairs. The hard part was getting it down afterwards.Things i repaired was

#1 track bar mount
#2 shock mount
#3 UCA mount
#4 spring perch
Thats was just the passangerside.
Now for the driverside.
Same as above, but the track bar mount. But i have to add rewelded LCA mount to the driverside.(cracked welds)LOL.But i think i am ready to start on the rear axle after i get back from BB.

:dunno: Maybe i should go fast and i won't break things so much.Cause this going slow sure is.

It's the "going fast" that gets you now... you're just going fast for 30ft. at a time... hitting whoops at an angle, be it going up or down...
SLOOOOOOW N STEEEADYYYYY...

My XJ.... NEVER got 20 miles per. gallon.... not totally stock brand spank'n new.
Something is smelling like B.S.

Curt i have checked mine over 20 times, but every time we have done this is was 19.3 to 20.8, this is all hwy driving.Cyndees does better than mine, but around town hers sucks it up.:wow:.I get great around town at low speeds with the gears i have.

Today was a good day.The welds held and it still steers nice. Now all i need to do is get more fuel and go back out. Had the wife leading and she took me thru some stuff i wouldn't put her jeep thru, but hey she was driving not me.LOL.Got to love this weather, it is only 90 out here in the canyons, getting some food and heading back out.

Does anybody want to do a night run tonight? I'll check back..
