Snap On vs ...

My problem with the HF stuff is they don't offer it in enough sizes.

That I can 110% agree with.

Lowes and their Kobalt line fill that void pretty decently when it comes to single sockets.

Though in reality I should look online for a better what of ordering single sockets.

The thing for me is, I have tool boxes with plenty of tools in them.

However, when I'm working on a something, 90% of the time I tend to just use a tool kit (i.e. 185 piece crapsman kit) along with my toolcart to do the work. It's a hell of a lot easier than going back and forth to the tool boxes.

I'm starting to use my tool box storage less for your normal tools, and more for stuff like breaker bars, calipers, etc. since I'm not much using my regular tools out of my toolbox.

Yeah I have a harbor freight tool cart. I roll it out to whatever I'm working on.

I still like Craftsman for sockets and solid wrenches, the rest of their tools are garbage

After about 15 years of various cars and tools, I would say "it depends". I started off with Craftsman and slowly upgraded to Snap On after busted knuckles on German cars. I do think the Craftsman do "ok" on the Jeeps. Over time if I use something often I tend to buy better than Sears/Craftsman. Sure the Sunex impacts will take bolts and nuts off and do it reasonably well. But they also feel cheap compared to better alternatives. And when I talk to pros they all say they've broken Sunex but don't say that about the more premium brands. I'm not saying that Snap On's are fool proof, because I've seen the sides of their chrome sockets come off before my eyes, but that was after 30 years of daily use... Some folks like the raised panel Craftsman stuff , some folks like the satin finish of German tools, and others like the full chrome of the Snap On tools..

Craftsman Industrial stuff is nice, I have a full set of their full polish long wrenches, and I'd say they're as good as the Snap-On wrenches I've used, at a much lower cost.

I may have inadvertantly sold myself on snap-on quality today.... I was using a coworkers snap-on bolt extractor... and it worked too well.... It snapped everything i put on it... a lisle tap driver, then 3 12-point sockets... including 2 within 30 seconds. One literally fell apart in 2 peices...

I want some of that....

I have heard over the years that Snap On bolt extractors are the best you can buy, or at least that style. Those that don't necessarily think Snap On is worth it generally still tout their bolt extractors and flare nut wrenches. I have also heard that Craftsman Professional wrenches are made with steel as good as Snap On uses at a far better price.

You can get quality approaching snap on at far less cost you pay for their name ...lol...it's like buying a timberland work boot vs a pair from walmart qaility is the same but no one will be admiring you walmmart boots like they do the $150 Tims .

Good to know about the Walmart work boots. I am in the market for a pair. I don't buy things for others to admire them. My point in the message quoted was that even folks who do not really go for Snap On still think there are a few of their tools that are worth it.

There are exceptions, but work boots arent one of them. Have fun with your walmart boots.

for a lot of things yes.... however there are some things that you really can't... the BJP1 kit being the big one... i've never has the pleasure of using one myself but people who have used one and have had experience with other ball joint presses will tell you the snap-on is so much better it's ridiculous (primarily due to the fact that unlike every other press the adapters lock into the press so you don't feel like you need extra hands)

plus i've really grown to love the dual 80 ratchet mechanism... sure it could do with a little less backdrag but it makes up for it in just solid brute strength... i've done things with my FHLF80 that more sane persons would have just used a breaker bar on

you really aren't just paying for the name either... if you work in a shop that is on a local snap-on dealer's regular stops you are paying for the convenience and warranty service

this i agree with. ive made a $50 a week payment to snap on for ten years and apparently last year i didnt buy many tools so i've got a bit of a credit. Enough for a down payment on this guy. Ordered it last week and cant wait for it to show up in my garage. My snap on dude even stops by the house!

Man $26k in tools is just ridiculous to think about.

My house got broken into last week and I lost about $1k worth of tools I had accumulated (in addition to the rest of the stuff I owned). I can't imagine having that many tools and losing them. You gotta have the right tools for the job though.

Jeebus dude!

I'd smack you If I were your financial planner!

That's a down payment for a house...

mmhmm but you also know the kind of money i make with my tools
