Smelly When Downshifting

Not sure if this is the right place or not (correct me if it isn't) but I have a question involving street performance. When I am coming to a stop and I down shift and the engine revvs a bit higher than usual, I smell something weird. It doesnt smell like normal exhaust, ofcourse, you dont always smell that because it is behind you. I just started noticing this because before I used to just roll up in neutral then brake, but I dont want to wear on my brakes so much. Any ideas?
 
what trans?
 
year? standard or auto trans?
 
Its your clapped out old 4.0 sucking oil past the valve guides and seals :D. Downshifting causes higher vaccuum and it will pull oil past worn guides. There is really no reason to do it unless you just want to or your brakes are really bad :D. Its also hard on the synchros in the transmision.

Clapped out :tear: dont tell me that haha. I just bought it! Its my first vehicle. lol. I was told 221k is just broken in. But you dont think it is something I should have fixed soon?
 
221K is nothing for a 4.0. At that mileage it does have worn out parts that could stand replacing but nothing that will leave you on the side of the road. I seriously would just stop downshifting as it doesn't do anything any good at all other than your brakes. And if they are that bad fix them :D.

Yeah I always just used my brakes because I figured, an auto uses its brakes like that, and it saves me gas money. :D I just started to do it because I was experimenting with some different ways to shift :rolleyes:

But seriously, you can do it (and down shift) without harm or damage, just needs to be done correctly. Matching revs is key.
 
clutchless shifting is easy and if done right you dont wear any parts out cause your basicly doing the work of the clutch.

If you have an ax-15 on the back of your 4.0L then you might want to think about checking your transmission seals and boots while your checking for smells. right on top of the transmission where your shifter goes into.

for me, it was a pain in the ass to order the parts but it got the oil ring and the 1.5 inch boot that seals the trans.

as far as the clutch goes, im sitting at 231,xxx on my 4.0L/AX-15 and its fine... although my 1st, 2nd, and reverse gear syncros are going.
 
The rotten eggs smell is coming from your catalytic converter. Mine does it all the time when using the engine to slow me down long hills.
