Sleeves through Frame.

So I'm watching this TRUCK! show and they're building up a YJ. I noticed that when they're drilling holes through the frame to mount their lift kit they insert this sleeve through the frame. When I install these special brackets to serve as mounts for my winch brush guard with recovery points, should I use these? What are they for?

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I believe the sleeve fits in the hole in the frame but does not go through the bracket. The purpose if this is what you are talking about is so that you can torque down the mount nice and tight without buckling the frame around the bolt.

If you just put a bolt through the center of the frame and start cranking on it it will dimple in and weaken the frame.

hope we were on the same page, I am not watching that show currently

It keeps the sides of the frame rail from squishing in when you torque down those bolts. It is better to use them than not to.

I believe they are called crush sleeves. As stated, they prevent the rails from collapsing when tightening the bolts/nuts. Always a good idea to use them.

Shouldn't they be called anti-crush sleeves because they keep you from torqueing down whenever it is and "crushing" the frame?

There is my thought of the day.

that would make sense, wouldn't it? :gee:

Agreed. They did call them crush sleeves and it makes good sense now that we talk about it, but I don't see it discussed around here often. Can you buy them or do you have to make them?

Before seeing this little thing, I was thinking of putting a steel plate on the other side of the frame rail to keep from damaging things, but there might be some tight spots and I could still distort the frame.

So you just drill the hole out a little bigger than needed for the bolt, stick this sleeve in there and it should be flush on both sides and the size of the hole in the unirails?

When I sleeved my subframe I made my own crush sleeves out of some .75x.120 wall DOM. That way I could use 1/2" bolts to hold my crossmembers and rock rails. I actually drilled the sleeve, which was in a U shape, with a .75" hole saw and a drill press, then welded it on and then used the existing holes to figure out where to finish drilling the subframe, tap in the crush sleeves, weld them in, and grind them smooth.

I'm sorry, I must be slow. What's DOM? What do you mean when you say " actually drilled the sleeve, which was in a U shape, with a .75" hole saw and a drill press, then welded it on and then used the existing holes to figure out where to finish drilling the subframe"? What was U shaped?

I'm sorry, but I'm new to Mod Tech?

DOM is "Drawn Over Mandral" tube, there isn't a seam inside the tube to interfere with the bolt.

I sleeved my entire subframe with a piece of 4x6 Rect tube that was cut in half. Each half sleeved one side. The halfs were a U shape and I pre drilled the holes in the sleeves before welding them on to the existing frame rails. This way I could drill the frame rails from oppisite sides and not worry about getting the bolt hole streight.

EDIT: here is a picture of the frame sleeve, you can see the holes I drilled for the crush sleeves.

I've wondered about the value and difficulty of reinforcing the entire sub frame. Thanks for the clarification.

Back to the bolt crush sleeves, do you buy these or make them out of pipe?

Both, you buy the tube and then make them.:D
