Site Admin vs Forum Admin

I'd like to post this up sooner rather than later... to hopefully give you guys a clue where I'm at.

I can do a lot of things as it relates to the vB forum daily admin, but I am pretty much clueless whan it comes to the actual 'site admin.' The few other technical posts here were like Ghetto Slang Azerbaijan to me

Not that I'm unwilling to learn & participate though, just sayin, y'all lost me at MYSQL (or before) Keep that in mind... I can't offer much advice on that end.

I can and will remain on duty to do the basic forum admin stuff: New forums, usergroup management, user issue troubleshooting etc... but beyond that, just a warning that y'all have an internet dummass on your hands.

In talking to Chicago Jeff, We should have at least two Server admis.
Who here is qualified to do this?

Randy, Geoff?...

as far as i know...me and geoff should both be qualified for the server side.

as for my qualifications, i've run a website similar in size to naxja (well, it might be a bit smaller than naxja now) on a dedicated server running vBulletin for 5+ years......so I think I'm definitely qualified to help out on both sides if needed.

However, I will not volunteer to take on either one on my own......definitely a team effort should be used (even though that means more hands in the cookie jar), so that we don't burn anyone out.

Also should add that I am on dialup at home... expecting anything snappy is sort of unreasonable. IF I see it (and feel some urgency) I'll get on it. If not, it may wait till I'm at work (M-F) or can secure a stable connection.

Not making excuses, it's just how it is out here in the sticks.

I'll be glad to get broadband. (probably about the time y'all get some laser shit)

So we have a good vB backup (Randy) who may be better at it than I... that's encouraging.

I'm good for a light site admin, while my Linux skills are a bit rough if the shit hits the fan I can figure it out, it'll just take a bit longer than Jeff or Glenn. I am perfectly comfortable with the Linux atmosphere so that's no worries. (Hell I keep trying to use *NIX commands when I'm on DOS boxes!).

This is a tad scary.
ChiJeff has had a look around.... adding multiple people (and those that have no clue (sorry Randy... not sure what you know... Geof has already said he is a winders cat) is a bad deal. 1 Admin with a *TRUSTED BY THE ADMIN* back up is sufficient. Adding more folks into server issues is just asking for shit to get fucked up.

Forum admins, 3 or 5 is fine at most. But guys, server admin is god, and it should be up to the top guy to pick his "assistant". Based on the replies in this thread, I think egos are speaking from some, rather than actual experience. But that is just my opinion.

If you think I am being a dick, too bad. I am looking out for NAXJA, and will not give things up until I know a qualified group is in place. Like it or not, that is how it is. And ye, this is my ego speaking. :)

There is no ego speaking here... If there were all I'd say is I've done work to *nix servers for years (technically true). All I'm doing is being honest about where my skills are and are not; trust me I've been around machines long enough to not over talk myself and to know that when the shit hits the fan I've generally been able to take care of it in time.

Naw, I trust you to be honest G. I just think folks need to know that "Admin" does not, by defualt, mean server Admin. It is important that the server admin choose his/her co-admin based on his/her trust of the individual. Also based on qualifications... two admins at once trying to sort out an issue is a recipie for disaster. Add in more that "have admined a server before" or "ran a this and that"..... you can see where I am am going.
G and Randy, you know as well as I do all of the other screwed up things about us.... lets not make this one an addition to that list.

One guy HAS to be lead... any "Co-*" should not be doing anything without the lead knowing. Most of the time, one active admin is sufficient. a co-admin is great, if they can coordinate.

But hey.... these are just my opinions. :)
