A simple fix for most of you im sure but I, for the life of me can not get my oil pan gasket to seal. I have dropped the pan twice now. I will start it up, then the leak starts comming out like crazy. pretty sure out of the collar inbetween the tranny and oil pan. How can I get this thing to seal up? i have the expensive rubber gasket, should i use rtv? maybe im torqing the bolts down too tight? any help on this simple fix would help.

sounds like the rear main seal to me too. I Have on of those pesky leaks to fix this summer also!

flash.

X3 on the rear main. but if you're sure it's not...

when i replaced my oil pan gasket, i put black(i think copper would be good for it also, just not blue or red)rtv on the top side of the gasket and held it up there by putting maybe 1 out of every 3 bolts in only tight enough to hold the gasket there. I then let it sit for a few hours. Then i rtv'd the bottom of the gasket and put the oil pan up and hand tightened all the bolts. I let it sit for 24hrs. then torqued the bolts down to spec. Worked great. If your xj is stock, i feel sorry for you, because its a bitch to maneuver that oil pan up and over the axle. Also, the rearmost bolts are hard to get to, but with a few ratchet extensions, you should be good. Hope that helps...

ps-be conservative with the rtv, more isn't better
