short throw shifter?

A short throw shifter is designed to minimise motion when shifting, not put the shifter closer to you. You might not get the results you're after...

Also, a short throw shifter is more of a "performance" driving modification than anything else - and trucks aren't usually driven that way.

If it were me (although I'm a 6'3" knuckle dragger...) I would see about scoring a shift lever from the boneyard, and bending it a little more so that the handle is farther back. You'll still have the same shift action, but you should be able to reach the handle a little easier. And, it will probably be a LOT cheaper than $300!

I've been running that shifter for several years and really like it. Kinda seems like a luxury at first but when you put as much miles on a vehicle as I do it has been a really nice addition that makes daily driving less of a chore.

Edit: Forgot to say that that shifter will actually put 3rd gear even farther forward since the shifter has less of a bend in it than stock.

Jes: How much shorter are the throws, and how much farther away would it make 3rd? it's not so much the distance away from me that makes me miss shifts; it's the distance from second to third. I just get lazy and don't depress the clutch all the way which in turn makes me let it out before i get the lever to 3rd. it really only happens when i space out.

5-90: I havnt decided yet which way to take my jeep. i love driving fast, but i love crawling too. One day when i have enough money I will buy 2 separate jeeps for this purpose. for now, i can buy the shift kit, shift faster on road when i feel like being sporty, and im sure it won't hurt to have it offroad.
 
The shifter basically gets rid of all the slop in the stock AX15 shifter and makes the throws about half as long. Shifts are much smoother and a lot more precise as well.
Third is maybe an inch farther forward, just guessing.

anyhoo.

idahoduk: i actually called b&m today. the shifter they make is for wranglers up to 98 w/ the ax15. the only cherokee model it fits is the 4 cyl w/ the ax5. therefore. . . no go on that. as for the other link; thanks. thats the exact same one i believe only about $70 cheaper.
 
Neither. Save your dosh until you can afford a stroker kit.

If you're OBD (1991-up,) there are some other mods available, but start with a good core if you're looking to increase things.

The short throw shifter is handy if you're doing bracket racing or somesuch (most bracketers like to use automatics for consistency...) or if you're road racing, but I honestly don't see much utility in a short throw shifter for off-road, or in a truck (opinion, of course - I'd use short shifters in a road car or in a racer, but I don't see any reason to install one in a truck, unless I've got to replace the thing anyhow. I don't drive a truck the same way I drive a car...)

its a '98 so its OBDII and i already have k&n fipk, and gibson exhaust(they were on the car when i bought it). I'm not looking to throw loads of cash into my motor right now. just looking for a way to make it a little quicker.
 
A short throw shifter doesn't enhance VEHICLE performance, and it isn't guaranteed to enhance DRIVER performance.

If you want to make it a little quicker, you'll want to think about a stroker (more low-end torque) or a re-gear job (puts more torque on the ground.) Not much else you can do "on the cheap" - sounds like what you can do has already been done, and you'll want to hit "nuts and bolts" tuning to accentuate other engine mods.

No B&M? Guess I'll go with Hurst. My shifter is getting a little loose and my copenhagen can shift knob fell off a few weeks ago. Time for something new. Thanks for checking on that!
 
I called Hurst customer service a while back, the only difference between the XJ and wrangler TJ one is the length of the stick and the angle, the base is the same. It's been a while, two kids in college puts alot of things on the back burner, but I was going to get the TJ one. As I remember the TJ one was shorter stick... 16" vs 18" or something like that... AX 15 is AX 15....
 
Exactly, an AX-15 is still an AX-15. While the throw of the Hurst shifter is shorter and more precise and I have enjoyed using it for the past few years, it will not make your shifts any quicker. AX-15's just don't shift that quick. I put mine in just because when you are spending(wasting :)) thousands on a drivetrain, what difference does a few hundred make?

If you do install one, be sure to use loc-tite on the bolts that hold the shift rod to the mechanism, they will come loose.

Just drive around an old fullsize pickup for a while. Go find an old Dodge or F250 like my grandpa had with the really long throw stick. Then, you will appreciate your AX-15. I do recall seeing these short throw kits for less in my Summit catalogs so shop around on the net. Maybe on Ebay but I am becoming less and less trustful of buying stuff there... My shift knob (fits my hand great) also broke but I repaired it with epoxy and its solid now.
