Hello Group,
My son has a 95 XJ, currently running a 3" ProComp lift. He is this Saturday installing 6.5 coils with 1.75 spacer, and the equivilent in the rear. I am trying not to make a long story of this. What we need help with is the shocks. I have a set of Rancho 5000's (used) sitting in my garage, Shock number for front is RS5112 - extended 26.80 inches, collasped 15.96 inches. The number for the rear is RS5116 - 24.57 inches extended, 14.79 inches collasped. I was running them on my 6" lift. Will these be too short for his new 8" lift. Or can anyone give us the shock numbers necessary for a 8" lift. Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated..... .....

thanks,
Casper

Have you considered extending/relocating the shock mounts/perches?

My XJ is currently sitting at 6" and those shocks you describe are barely enough for the lift. So I guess they will be kind of short for the 8" one.

I do not know what shocks are suitable for 8" but I guess you could gain -maybe- one inch, by using bar pin eliminators.

No problem. Keep up the good work of being the ... nice little ghost!

Relocate the bottom rear shock mounts as done in the Tech article, and also some bpes.

For the front lowers, use some angle iron to make extended bpes. Extend your bumpstops correctly, and that should give the proper length for your shocks.

I want to thank all of you that replied to my post on the shocks. It is great to be able to talk to experience and cut back on the trial and error method. Thanks again guys,

How did the shocks fit?

The 5112's are the same length as the 5010/9010 shocks many run with a front stud eliminator and BPE. The rear 5116 probably needed a little help with an upper BPE and could probably use the rear axle mount trim and relocate modification.

The shock travel for both should end up near the middle of the travel with these mount changes (maybe two-inches off the exact middle, biased to the short side with less compression & more extension, depending on the lift).

Hello Ed,
Everything worked out great. We did have to install a BPE on the front upper, but I perfer that mounting anyway. It is stronger and more reliable. In the rear we used the rear sway bar mounts for the upper connection for the rear shocks. We had taken off the rear sway bar some time back, and kept the mounts just for this reason. I have been using the same setup on my 87 XJ for
2-3 years now. I have had no problems at all. I really like the setup. Thanks for your help ED,

Casper

Just go and order a set of SJ shocks with 29-32 inches of travel. Then you dont have to worry about mixing up your part numbers, and I believe that Rancho makes a set that long. Just check up on it.

32" of travel?? What lift should you have to use these? I am running at 6" and my shocks have 10" of travel. And I do not think they need more than that.

I am not questioning, just asking.

Tnx

JnJ,
My son and I just finished his 8" lift tonight, and he had to take off ASAP to head back to Mesa. But he is coming back up this next week, so I will take some good pictures and post them. We now have our shop setup fairly well, and we make most of the parts that we need. We built a set of lower and upper control arms with heim joints. We have a really nice pipe bender, wire feed welder, drill press, cutoff saws, and other necessary tools for making most parts. We are going to finish his complete skid package and front and rear fenders this next week. He went with the 8" skyjacker coils. He is running a set of 33 x 12.50 MT's at this time, and it looks really GREAT. Now mine looks a little timid next to his. Time to reconsider some modifications. We are presently working on a full locker system for all XJ's, and I will keep you posted when we are finished. We will have to have it tested of course before we market it. I will send you some pictures sometime this next week Buddy. Take care,

Thanks,
Casper

Make sure you post a write-up and/or pics when you finish this. It would be much appreciated.

I dunno, thats what mine said when i ordered them I guess its from the top of the stud to the eye at full extension. Thats my guess but what ever they are, me and my friend ordered the same shocks he got his for his 8 inch lift. and mine for my 6 inch lift.

XJeep633, I have to agree with you on the size of shock verses the 8" lift, but we did a complete shock relocation for both the front and back. The back lower shock mounts are no longer on the bottom of the axle housing. We moved them to the top. And so far as the front, I will have to post pictures of them for you to see exactly what we did. But with the relocation of the shock mounts, the shock #'s I Posted earlier worked great!
FERGIE, We will definitely be posting pictures ASAP!

Thanks,
Casper
