Ok did a TON of searching and couldn't find an answer. I'm just curious if I should install the fan vertical or horizontal. I found a bunch of threads(and go jeeps site) that do it one way or another but nobody really lays out the pros/cons of each layout...

I would guess as long as it fits it wouldn't matter. Bottom line is the fan itself is a circle, so there's no dif how you mount the shroud, the fan itself will cover the same amount of rad.
If you can make it fit... mount it up however you like.

may depend on whether you want to retain your stock a/c fan. I did, so I mounted my Taurus fan vertical. The other benefit of vertical is that you can mount the trannie cooler on the backside of the bumper, and the fan pulls air through the trannie cooler also. See GoJeep.com for pics.

yea I saw his pics which is what sparked my initial conundrum...I'm kinda concernce about clearance up front. You don't have any issues with it hanging down in the path of potential rocks/trees?

I just did mine horizontally last weekend- there is still enough of the shroud hanging down to cover a longish tranny cooler (not yet installed), and I didn't care about keeping the stock electric fan - I don't understand the rationale for having the stock electric after putting in the taurus fan....

having said that, i will now contradict myself and state that I am keeping an eye out for a smaller but higher efficiency electric fan to put in place of the stock electric. it seems to me to be a waste to not have any air being pulled through that section of the fan which still is fairly large even with the taurus fan in place. another alternative I am considering is to get another taurus fan just for the shroud, and hack the shroud onto the one that is on the XJ so that it covers the whole rad from side to side. I think this would probably make the biggest improvement in cooling.

Someone should come up with a fiberglass impregnated plastic shroud just for putting a Taurus fan in an XJ and covering the whole radiator. I think it would sell like crazy if it were priced right.
