Shifter gate lock disable?

So for a mostly trail driven rig is there a way to disable the shift gates for an auto. In an emergency it would be nice to just slap the shifter into reverse instead of fumbling with the button. I have also found that I can't down shift out of overdrive unless I have my foot on the brake pedal. Is that normal?

As far as the OD/brake thing, maybe disco the shifter lock cable.
Radesigns makes their "rock" shifter that does not use a button.
You could always pull off your shifter handle and lock the rob button down so you can move it without pressing the button.
Although in all the years of people wheeling, do not see pressing the button to shift being an issue?

I know it's not heard of. I did a fair amount searching and didn't see anything about it. I have looked at the rock shifter and that is the only thing I would see as a benefit.

There are many ways to modify your shifter assy. Just pull off the t-handle and lift up the shifter bezel and take a look at how it works. You can modify the lockout or the shift gate itself. As far as having to put your foot on the brake to shift out of park that can be modified simply by disconnecting the solenoid on the shift interlock cable.

I'm ok with pressing the brake to shift out of park. It's downshifting out of overdrive that I'm having a problem with. I can't downshift out of overdrive without my foot on the brake. I'll take a look at the shifter assembly and see if there is a quick way to modify it.

That doesn't make sense. You should be able to move the shifter into any gear without pressing the brake pedal, well once you pull it out park that is.

Ive just slammed mine in reverse before rolling at least twice and it always works.

I'm going to see if there is a way to lock the button down so I can throw it from drive to park. But it still bugs me about the down shifting issue. It seems to be a brake interlock issue.

As stated, there are 2 cables that connect to the shifter. One is for the trans, obviously, the other is the shifter interlock. Disco that and see if your shifting issue resolves. if it does, just leave it off.

What about the RADesigns rock shifter? Looks like a slick setup....

Way to repeat the conversation. Ha. Just playing. Already mentioned it tho.

I would totally do the rock shifter as I already bought but haven't installed the rail shifter. However I am swapping out to a five speed very soon and do not want to spend any on this as much as possible.

you can grind down the stock shift gate so you can go from drive to reverse withour pressing the button takes a couple minutes with a file or quicker with a dremel
