My little brother doesn't believe me.
Say I had a 95 YJ/4.0/231/ with an AX15 ,and also a similar year XJ with 4.0/231/ with an AW4. It is possible and straightforward to drop the auto from the XJ, the TCU, the NSS, etc. , and swap it out with the maual/cluthch/cylinder from the YJ, and then stick the auto into the YJ?

possible or no?

Definitely not straightforward.

My '88 MJ has a YJ AX-15 in it. The transfer case linkage is totally different from the XJ linkage. With some effort I can probably convert it to the XJ linkage, but I bought it the way it is and it works, so it's not a high priority.

Going the other way will be even more of a problem, because of the length of the AW-4 drive train. The rear drive shaft will be VERY short and the drive line operating angles will be critical.

Hmm, good point on the YJ DS angle. I guess a SYE is in order. Whats different about the shifting linkage? would it be relatively easy to find a junked XJ and convert the linkage?
Are those the two biggest obstacles?
Linkage and DS angle? The electronics are plug n play correct, or is there some electronic mystery im missing?

The YJ transfer case shifter mounts directly to the case, and the arm comes off the top of the bellcrank that extends through the side of the case rather than the bottom (or maybe I have that reversed, but in any case it's the opposite of the XJ setup).

I have a t-case shifter linkage for an '88 -- but the AX-15 isn't the same length as the BA 10/5, so I need a linkage rod from one of the AX-15 years, and since I haven't found it in a boneyard I'd have to buy it new -- you would not believe the price DC wants for that sucker. Their pricing on hard parts makes no sense at all.

So I ignore it. If I ever decide I want carpet and a console again, I'll have to address it. For now -- it works.
