Server slow?

Do we have a bandwidth problem?

Sometimes the Forum loads right up and things are fine.

At other times though, the Forum takes 40-90 seconds to load, assuming IE doesn't time out on it. Same goes for posting. Sometimes it take the post right off, and sometimes there is an incredible delay. :rattle:

I have checked things on my end. No un-neccesary processes going on and other sites function normally.

people hitting that refresh button every 3 seconds to see if someone responded to their post.

Figures, I had to log on to see that ;)

I just figured out Honkey's sig. Slow day :sure:

Jeff'll get it solved out eventually. Just took over the post and already he's under the gun :helpme:

According to Jeff, it's packets being dropped on the way in and out. Not the server - it's either an ISP problem or (I hope not!) a backbone problem.

What you can do...

1) Don't go hitting "reload" - especially if you've just tried to post and it's slow going up. That generates a batch of duplicate posts, and mods have to go in and delete them.

2) Don't go hitting "reload" - especially if you've just started a thread. Same problem only moreso.

3) Don't go hitting "reload" - unless your browser has totally stopped/given up. Let it finish trying first.

4) Try to not bother Jeff. He already knows about the problem, and several of us have already offered to help him troubleshoot it (not much we can do, either.)

5) Be patient. It doesn't seem to be a problem with our hardware or software, so there's really nothing Jeff can do about it. Or Glenn, should he decide to help. Or any of the rest of us.

I just wanted to explain it here, so that non-Members can see what's going on as well (everyone should have access to this part of the boards.)

Don't know - don't know where the problem actually was.

Just kind of a "general thank you" and burning Twinkies and Mountain Dew as a sacrifice to the Gods of IT should serve, methinks. (Maybe that's what someone did wrong? Used decaf coffee for their offering? Hmm...)

Dammit, Jon, I had to give up that shit when I diagnosed as a diabetic. I am *NOT* giving up caffeine! I would find a good Scotch to be acceptable, though......

As far as the site goes, news will be forthcoming after it runs for 24 hours post-change.

Will an 18-year-old MacAllen do? Rum is a "utility" drink for me, but I keep scotch around for special occasions (I am Scottish, after all...)

So, have you all figured out why we've been dropping packets yet?

18yo Macallan's will do nicely! I do profess that my favorite is still the Balvenie 21yo Portwood. Every twice in a while I run across something like a Macallan's 25... and then see the price tag (still about double or triple what it takes to fill my CTD.)

As far as the dropped packet issue goes, it's gotten better, but I still think I'm seeing occasional bouts. Last night's changes have had a much greater effect, though.

I am as well - but you didn't have anything you wanted me to do to try to help, and I figured you knew about it already.

Any idea where the trouble actually was?

That smells like the networking issue that's been happening. I've not had much, if any issues with that over the last few days.

I can tell where part of the problem was, with a background low priority log analyzer task that was chewing up memory like no tomorrow. As the site is database driven, that particular type of log analysis is nearly worthless so I turned the option off.

The back end system analysis reporting tool claims an average 84% idle time yesterday, 11% user space time, the balance spread across system tasks, waiting on I/O and low priority jobs.

I understood about half of that - but the part I understood made sense (I'm more of a hardware guy...) I'm just glad you're getting things sorted. I really need this distraction from dealing with my MIL some days...:twak:
