I'm trying to replace my speed sensor... but my Haynes manual doesn't seem to mention it anywhere an I have no idea where it is located. I think it connects somewhere on the transmission? And then somewhere in the engine bay? Any help with this would be much appreciated.

The crankshaft Position sensor is also called the engine speed sensor. The CPS is located on the transmission bell housing at the 10 o'clock when sitting in the driver's seat. Lots of posts on CPS.

What is your problem which is pointing you to replacing the speed sensor?

Not to be left out, there is a speed sensor in the AW-4 automatic that the TCU uses to shift the tranny.

I'm looking for the vehicle speed sensor, the problem I'm having is that my speedometer only works sporadically and my cruise control never works.

OK, now were getting somewhere. Now we need to know the year model. Early XJ's used an old fashioned speedometer cable running from the xfer case to the back of the speedometer. If you had a cruise control, the cable terminated into a small speed sensor a few inches behind the speedometer and then a short cable ran from the sensor to the speedo. If this is what you have, you most likely need a new speedo cable. They are quite cheap and can be had at Autozone or the like for around $10 or less.

The newer models, and sorry I don't remember the switch over year, did away with the mechanical speedo cable and went to an electronic sensor that plugged into the xfer case.

Hope that helps. To tell the difference, crawl under and look at the xfer case and see if it has a mechanical cable or a pair of wires.

I have a '92 Limited with a sensor rather than a cable. Thanks for your help, I did manage to find it!
