So, I'm trying to fill out this application for a Federal position. The page I'm on has a couple of questions about registering for the Selective Service. I never registered. I turned 18 in boot camp and did nearly 8 years active duty. I was always told that I didn't have to register, as I was already in the military(makes sense). The obvious answer to Q18 is no.
The choices for Q19 are YES, NO, NOT APPLICABLE. It seems to me that I should answer NA to 19, but I'd like to know for sure. I'd answer YES due to my service, but I don't have a 'copy of the exemption' unless my DD-214 serves that purpose. The 214 states my "RESERVE OBLIG. TERM. DATE" as 1998-09-21, which is prior to my discharge date of 1998-10-01 (no reserve time required).
Anybody know for sure?

18. If you are a male at least 18 years of age, born after December 31, 1959, have you registered with the Selective Service System?

*19. If you are a male at least 18 years of age, born after December 31, 1959 AND you have NOT registered with the Selective Service System, do you have an approved exemption?
(Note: You will be asked to provide a copy of the exemption prior to interview and selection.)

This is a bit of a chart I found on the Selective Service web site.

Scrolled down to read the footnote and it said:
* Must register within 30 days of release unless already age 26, or already registered when released, or
unless exempt during entire period age 18 through 25.
Doesn't really answer my question of what to answer for Q19 though.

When you enlisted you were registered.

The part where you can get your number is down for maint right now but it says that it comes back up around 2am.

Thanks. How do you know, if you don't mind my asking? Just trying to CMA, ya know. I'd hate to be removed from consideration on a technicality.

I guess that means that I should answer 'YES' to Q18 and 'N/A' to Q19?

Trust me...If you have a DD214 with an Honorable you can consider yourself Good to Go.
You were registered upon enlistment. Basically check YES. Your DD214 is your exemption. I worked in recruitment while on light duty with a back injury last year and this is how we handled it...

If you failed to register with Selective Service, Section 12(g) of the Military Selective Service Act allows non-registrants to receive benefits under specific conditions. As a veteran, or part-time National Guard or Reservist, you satisfy those conditions with your DD Form 214 showing the dates of your military service, or a current military ID card if still on active duty or a member of the National Guard and Reserves. These documents serve as evidence that your failure to register was not knowing and willful. Therefore, men who served on full-time active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces should not be denied student financial aid, loans, or grants; vocational training under WIA; government employment; and security clearances, on the basis of their failure to register with Selective Service. As long as you have proof of your active duty military service, such as your DD 214, or current military ID card if still on active duty or a member of the National Guard or Reserves, your subsequent failure to register should not be a bar to any benefits or programs, contingent upon registration compliance, for which you are otherwise qualified.
