sea foam engine treatment

just purchased a can of SEafoam engine treatment. I poured 1/3 of it in my TB, then I poured some more in my crankcase then I dumped the balance in my fuel tank.

I have two questions for the users of Seafoam, first, on the can it says nothing about the duration in which to leave the SEafoam in the crankcase to clean the galleys and such, should I leave it in for 3000 miles??

2nd question, I used some to clean the butterfly on the TB, I opened the butterfly with my finger to clean down inside of the throat, when I finished I started up the motor and now it idles at 1200 rpm in neutral, the idle drops down to 900 when I drop it into gear, this is with a AW4 tranny. Did I screw up the Idle control by opening the butterfly and cleaning inside of the TB??

Question #1. You can leave it in until the nest oil change. That's what I do.
Question #2. I don't know.
JIM.

Question #1. I put it in 500 miles before my oil change.
Question #2. Did you force the butterfly open or what? You should always open the butterfly with the Throttle.

First time users I suggest this treatment.

Get 2 cans of SeaFoam and a set of new spark plugs.

Run engine until it’s up to temperature, slowly at first add SeaFoam through air intake, increase adding SeaFoam until engine dies.

Let engine set until cold, and then change the plugs

Add a can of SeaFoam to a full tank of gas after that just add a can of SeaFoam every 3000 miles to a tank of fuel.

My old 247k mile 87 xj gets 21 mpg avg. without any fuel additive and 24 mpg with a Ounce of Acetone to every 10 gal of gas. For me anymore Acetone decreases mileage

#2, depends on whether it was running at the time, some of the cleaners are not plastic friendly, I excersize extreme care and caution when cleaning the inside of the TB when it's on the engine. Better solution is to remove the TB and clean it on the bench where you can pull the sensors and do a through job of it.
Takes about 10 min to pull it and put it back on, takes about 20 min to really clean it up on the bench but when it's done it looks new, takes me alot longer if I decide to use semi-chrome on it though :laugh3:

The 1st-time treatment above looks pretty good.

For routine service, every third oil change or so I pull the snorkel off the Throttle body, then scrub the insides and the butterfly with some TB spray and an old toothbrush... this gets all the deposits off pretty well. I also take the IAC motor off the front of the TB and clean it and it's inner seat the same way.

Once I'm happy with that, I put the IAC back in, warm the Jeep up, and add 1/2 can of Seafoam into the intake stream, let it sit 10-15 min, then fire it up. It will smoke for awhile... don't be alarmed :) I dump the remaining 1/2 can into the fuel tank @ apprx. half-full.

Thanks for reminding me I'm due for a TB cleaning!

Rich, looks better powder-coated, 'cept you need another tb cuz of the downtime :roflmao:

Langer, I did force the butterfly open with my finger, didn't use the linkage to do this. Did I throw the IAC out of adjustment with that tactic? Can I re adjust or do I buy a new one??

I don't know you could have damaged the stepper motor.

I've never believed in any automotive additives....they don't work or have so little affect as to be un-noticeable.

That was until OldMan told me to put BG44K into my tank. The XJ had not been run for 2.5 yrs and I could not keep it idling...even after new plug,cap/rotor, etc..

However, after many days of starting (I can't drive it yet, all 4 tires are flat so it's on jack stands) and running it, it's 200% better. Unbelievable. It's smoked like hell for a while (a weird tan colored smoke..not oil) but pretty much purrs now.

SOOO...I've never used Seafoam but am thinking about trying that now as an engine treatment...
Does this stuff REALLY work? Noticeably? What's it going to do? Same as BG44K? I know Oldman has a history or some sort of experience in the fuel/petroleum industry...

where do I get the seafoam or bg44k stuff Ive looked aroound and no one here has it?

The only place I found withing 20miles that sells BG44K was at a Volvo repair shop around the corner from my office. They service Volvo's BUTthey also sell many can's of BG44K to guys like us!

I've seen Seafoam at AutoZone...

Berrymans I have seen at PepBoys and I believe autozone. We stock sea foam at Napa and I think most other Napa stores do as well. I have also seen it at Autozone, and I believe B-mans at Napa too.

I have a feeling both have the same ingredients. No proof but I'm suspicious.

SeaFoam's one of the best and easy to find, I have no idea where the got the name but it was devoloped to remove carbon from 2 cycle marine engines. Some people say if it comes in a plastic bottle it's no good, SeaFoam's in a metal can just like BK44k.

Off topic, but the connection w/ the name is obvious to me.

I had poured some into a clear plastic cup to introduce it into the engine in a controlled manner. It is green, it does foam and it really does look like ocean water as viewed from the surface of the ocean.

Anyone have any experience w/ their other products?

I have used the Trans tuneup in my old Dodge Powerwagon when it was not shifting into first right away, That was 2 years ago in it's still going strong with out problems.

This stuff seems to work pretty well for general clean up. I just cleaned out a fuel line on my M715 that was pretty gunked up. I blew it out with some compressed air and poured about half a bottle through the line. Seems to have helped a bit. As for the throttle body, I'd just get a can of TB cleaner and spray the hell out of it. I removed the IAC and cleaned it up separately. Solved all my idle problems that way.

It works good, but slowly. The trick is to dissolve gum and varnish slowly so as not to cause it to plug something up. The main function of SeaFoam though is to remove carbon buildup in the injectors and combustion chambers. One warning though if your engine is really dirty the crap that comes out of the exhaust can make a real mess on a nice clean driveway.
