Scott and I joined Jeff Ayres and the madxj guys for their McCaslin Mnt run this past weekend.
This place has everything, great trails, rocks, enough mud to give Rev a woody.
Kind of a trek to get there (northern WI) but well worth it.
Should definate consider planning an outing there next year.

how far north you talkin?
Jeff Ayres took pics. I'm guessing he'll post them here or on madxj. (Or you could PM him for them)
It's about 3.5 hrs north of Milwaukee.
Straight up 141 from Green Bay to Crivitz (halfway to Iron Mountain, MI) puts you in the neighborhood.

Nice meeting you Brad

McCaslin is OK. Take 41 to 32 at Green Bay, go through Pulaski. Turn east at Lakewood about 8mi. Watch the corners, they are killers. Turn in at the McCaslin Campground. If you are not camping, be sure to pay the $10/day trail fee at the office.

Folks should know some "history" about McCaslin Mt.
McCaslin is not an Off-Road park per se. A number of absentee owners and a Paper company graciously allow us to use the property. For access to the property, the campground owners collect a small fee and get us to sign a waiver. We don't argue about it as they keep us in good standing with the property owner(s). However, when the property owners patence runs thin, as it did this spring, large areas close for good. We "lost" some of the largest obsticals this last spring after Labor day.

AVF is nice also. That is run by the RPM4X4 club http://www.rpm4x4.com you should find enough interesting things to challenge you there also.

Do I hear an option for Winterfest '06?
Yea, Indiana is just too damn warm in February.
Anyone know of a good place to wheel in Saskatchewan?

Can you say, "big block Suburban on 44" boggers"

is this the same as iron range?

Neither McCaslin Mtn nor Apple Valley Farms is the Iron Range Off Road Park. McCaslin has been described by Ron, AVF's can be learned about in the link above and is damn near in the center of WI (North of Eau Claire a bit.) The Iron Range park to which you refer is in Gilbert MN, about an hour north of Duluth and damn close to Canada! :) I was just there two weekends ago. This is an official MN off road park run by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/ohv/iron_range/index.html http://www.irontrail.org/recreation/atv-ohv/ohv-park/

As for winter wheeling at McCaslin, it can be done, but if there is decent snow, it can be difficult. However, the last few years, snow has been pretty light...at least for half the winter. The latter half seems to be the best bet for good snow recently.

I only took two pictures because my camera batteries were dying so I gave up. They are both of Brads TJ (Tippy Jeep) :) Jeff

No problem. Glad someone could enjoy it.

Brad, Thanks for the extra seat all day. I had a blast!! The trails at McCaslin are great wheeling. Great views too. There was a good amount of carnage also. I really got a kick out of the big suburban on 44"s that was a big piece of sh!t that couldn't get anywhere. I got a couple of pictures on my phone and this is the only good one.

The two door pictured facing me had some bad or dumb luck. Don't know which one. He tried a hill after Brad and ended up tearing his left knuckle and ball joints apart after replacing the left side axleshaft twenty minutes prior.

Zuki Ron, it was great meeting you. You are a very interesting person. The group that you were with were great people too. I hope to see a future get together at this place. I think that alot of people here would like to wheel this place. Lots of challenging spots and a good amount of rocks to climb around on.

Kim.

Brad, I can't say enough good things about that 'Burb. The way the body jumped up and down on the frame as the suspension worked; the flex was outstanding! It outflexed your XJ by a mile, and the sound of a V8 running on all six cylinders... truely awsome.
An extremely rair and unique vehicle; right up there with the H3. I wish I could own one; alas, I can't even afford the payments ;)

Maybe next time you'll have a Jeep with you. I still think that car could have made it up Mission Impossible, no problem; it's all driver ;)

I believe I spoke with Kid and Zuki from a nice Moab campfire the other night  Glad you guys were still able to wheel, even if it wasn't Moab. One day I am gonna head East and check out these places you have to pay to wheel; the 4,000 miles of forest service and BLM roads in Idaho are getting old ;)

Absolutely blew me away.
I especially liked the automatic lightening system that would eject uneeded parts as it went down the trail.
You usually have to go down to Bammy or Virginny to see engineering like that.

I went wandering around McCaslin several years ago, on a Pipeline clean up weekend. Took my bone stock XJ up the Rock Garden, and went around McCaslin with a friend in a built up TJ. Too much mud for me, but otherwise fun.

I went wandering around the logging roads and trails this weekend in my CTD up in the Keweenaw.
