Yeah, it's late but what the heck, here are my pictures and story for the week. Point and shoot, so don't expect anything like Stebels.
I thought some of you might be interested in seeing my photo’s from my recent trip to Moab Utah. I usually try to do a four wheeling trip every other year or so. I take my Jeep somewhere cool and spend the week crawling over big rocks, exploring, and enjoying the western US. I used to drive a modified Jeep Cherokee. However, this year I had sold the Jeep and hadn’t finished building my next project (heavily modified ’88 Jeep Comanche pickup) so I made plans to attend the North American XJ Associations 25th anniversary of the XJ (Jeep Cherokee) gathering in Moab Utah with a friend that had a Jeep or two that we could wheel in instead. I took my pickup with camper and car hauling trailer (all used but new to me in the last year) from my house in northern Wisconsin to Mikes house just east of Kansas City, MO where we loaded up his Rubicon TJ (factory locking front and rear differentials, factory 4:1 low range in the t-case, 4” lift and 285x16 tires (33’s)) and headed for Moab. We took I70 to 24 to Colorado Springs to Canon City and west on US50. We spent that night along the highway at a little BLM campground along the Arkansas River. Friday we headed west on 50 to Montrose, south on 550 to Ridgeway, west on 62 to 145 to 90 to Utah 46 to 191 and north to Moab. It was a back way into Moab, but we passed some scenic country side. We camped most of the week at Gold Bar BLM campsite along the Colorado River on 279 west of Moab surrounded by red canyon walls. Very beautiful! We moved into town to Slickrock RV park for two days to be with friends for the festivities. We wheeled quite a few trails in the area that neither of us had been on in the past, watched some more extreme rigs work their way through some really rough trails, did some hiking including an outfitter guided jaunt with 190’ of rappelling, enjoyed the warm fall weather and made new friends. This year we didn’t even have to do any campground wrenching!!! We left Moab in a sandstorm blowing right at us Saturday, but we only went as far as Pagosa Springs, CO where we spent the night camped along the San Juan river, had a nice fajita dinner, soaked in the hot springs, watched a lightening storm, and got hailed on! Sunday we dropped down to Chama, NM, took some train pictures, climbed over the ice covered mountains to Antonito where we took more train pictures. We kept driving for 19 hours before pulling into Mikes’ house at 2am Monday! Later Monday I drove back home getting in about 9pm. It was a great trip and other than supporting the oil companies more than my fair share and realizing my Hemi doesn’t have enough power to cruise over the mountains easily, I’ve got nothing but good things to say! Enjoy the pictures.
