I've got someone that had his oil changed at jiffylube (second mistake, for the first one look at the title), and they didn't tighten the drain plug completely. A couple hundred miles later it fell off and all the oil drained from it. He promptly turned it off, bought a new one and filled the oil. Once he fired it back up, it knocks/ticks at 3k rpm and higher, but under a load it goes away. My first thoughts were a collapsed lifter, but I don't know if it even uses lifters. Anyone familiar with the engines Scions use? I'm not about to tell the guy I can help him out until I know what I'm getting myself into.

I'd have a mechanic look at it and contact Jiffy Lube regarding the problem.

I know a couple people they've bought new motors for.

Why did he try to fix it, i would have called them first before i touched it..With only a couple hundred miles after the oil change..Good luck, doesn't this have a overhead cam? Never looked at 1..

I am a mechanic . . . just not a Toyota mechanic. I haven't had a chance to take a look at it yet, and don't have access to any of their tech manuals at the moment.

There's no way to prove that it was jiffy lubes fault after a couple hundred miles.

I'm not sure where you got that he tried to fix it himself. He bought a drain plug and oil so he could get it home.

From this sorry..I would have call them first thing, thats all i am saying..I would still call to see if they can help..I know they were in the news alot not to long ago..

I lost oil pressure after a change once. First thing I did was call the place that did it. They came to where I was, fixed it on the spot, then had me drive back to their shop to clean up the oil that went everywhere under the hood. They also paid for the diagnostic at a shop (after some serious prodding from me) to check for related problems.

Your friend should have gotten on them immediately and this is why.

Moving forward, what Scion is it? If its a Tc I'd look for information on 4cyl Camry's; the Scion Tc uses the same 2.4L 4 banger. The newer bigger XB's use the same motor. I believe the older ones and the xA used the same motor as the Echo.

I don't mean to be argumentative, so I apologize if I come off rude, I agree he probably should have called the shop. . . but. . . in a military town, especially a USMC town, they're not going to do anything besides prove that there's no way to pin it on them. And since it's a town that supports 60,000 Marines, pissing off a couple here or there isn't going to shut down their chain of stores. . .

I appreciate the info about the different motors, that's more of what I'm looking for. I'll need to get ahold of him and ask him, I forgot they make a couple different scions now. Does anyone have any experience working on any of the newer Toyota engines?

if its a scion tc or second gen xA/xB it uses a 2azfe, which as previously mentioned in a camry 2.4L, first gen xA`s and xB`s use the echo 1.5L 1nzfe. all of them are dohc.
