Scary moment........

Was sitting here about 1 hr ago reading some tech posts when my wife wakes up hollering for me to get into the bedroom quick.

Normally, that'd be intriquing...... but I get into the bedroom and it smells like something is burning. Very irritating/burning to the nose and back of the throat. I go throw open the windows and turn off the TV/satellite and start checking all the outlets and fixtures.

Nothing's hot, no smoke coming from any particular area, but the smoke is getting thicker toward the ceiling. I turn on a flashlight and the smoke gives it that light saber effect...... so I battle an imaginary Darth Vader for a second and get back to the smoke investigation. :D

The attic access is in our closet and I run out to get the ladder. I poke my head up there and I get the same light saber effect. I put aside my urge to do more battle with Vader and haul my tired ass up into the attic. I'm trying not to kick up all that nasty blow-in insulation and get itchy..... but I can see a faint column of smoke coming from above the bedroom..... I get a bit closer and see that it's coming from the junction box for the ceiling fan/light.

I come back down from the attic and hop up on the bed and sure as shit... there's a strong odor of an electrical something burning around the fan. The fan is slowly spinning down as if the power had been turned off to it. It had been working a minute ago before I climbed into the attic. I kill the power at the switch and head out to the garage for tools. When I get back, there's thick white smoke pouring out from all over the fan. The smoke is so thick it's dropping like a slow waterfall..... kinda cool to look at but disturbing all the same.

Figuring that maybe the power wires had chaffed in the metal junction box, I pull the fan down, remove the wires and check with the flashlight. I see no arc spots, chaffed wire..... all seems fine. Wires aren't even hot.

The center of the fan is hot near the motor, but the top above the motor isn't. I pull the 3-light housing apart and DAMN! The smell goes from bad to horrible. There's a 2"x2"x1" black box that's hot as hell and the side is blown out/melted and a white/gray chalky blob is coming out of it.

Dunno what that box is, but it sure put out a helluva lot of smoke and fouled up the bedroom ........and gave us a scare.

3-way capacitor to be exact. FWIW, the fan motor is probably toast now too.

Now if you just replace the capacitor the fan motor is probably gone.........might be time to upgrade the ceiling fan/light..........

If you don't want to replace it yourself I know a bunch of electricians who need extra work :confused1

.............maybe you can buy that flux capacitor and manipulate time when you turn on the fan?

Just be glad you caught it before it decided to do something nasty. It would have gotten hotter and the motor lock up and either popped the breaker (which I am surprised it didn't when the motor started to slow down) or spew hale & brimstone.

Yeah, my wife was REALLY glad I was home when this happened - she had been fast asleep and said she wasn't sure what woke her up, but when she smelled smoke, she freaked. (Probably more because she thought firefighters were gonna have to come into our "messy" house...... :D)

That fan is now residing in the trash. We always wanted to swap it out anyway - for one with a remote control! :laugh3:

So Frank, what's with all the capacitor issues over here lately? Sheesh! :D

Yeah, yeah, burn the house down THIS week. Always trying to get out of wheeling aren't ya...............:greensmok

And YOUR excuse?

Oh yeah...... Sudden Onset Audism.

Guess I shouldn't pick on the handicapped.......... :D

you have a messy house? last time i was there, it was spotless........or did your wife clean before i showed up?

And if you were at work, she would of had a bunch of firefighters in her bedroom - without you! LOL!

You ruined it by being home.

Glad to see that there are still "mental offroading episodes" capable in the adult male species, that allow the boy to frolic even for a few moments in the midst of a chaotic situation.

Do you have smoke alarms in all your rooms?????????? If not, i would go now to buy some.... Thank god your all safe, it doesn't take much to burn your home to the ground

Yeah, I'd thought about that after this happened - and it's great advice, thanks! When we purchase a new fan I'll be including a smoke detector for the bedroom to the list. We have two in the basement, and one in the central hall (1500 sqft ranch) but never thought about early-warning benefits of having one in the bedroom. I think I'll also get one for the kitchen since we have a shit-ton of appliances that get plugged in there.

Rev,

It wasn't a cheap fan - at least not by my standards - IIRC it was around $200 from Lowe's. Now, the others in the rest of the house.... Cheapies. Isn't that Murphy's law? The expensive one takes a crap......

Yeah, What's up wit dat Holmes? First you keel you're A/C, now, then keel a ceiling fan....Don't even think about touching the fan in your heep!!

No sir! I ain't touching the Jeep fan - It's got one of these so I don't go near it anyway...... :D

Go to a lighting store.

Not Lowes, Home Depot, Wal-Mart...etc.

There is a difference.

Rev

Sure you bet!
