I have one of these bad boys on the way. I figure i will get a good solid baseline of what mileage and such I am getting with stock gears and 31's on my way to the Cherokee Crawl. Then a good comparison when I go 4.10's. How do you guys have yours set up, meaning what are the most important parameters to you guys and why? Obviously MPG's is a big one.

I have mine showing MPG, coolant temp, intake air temp, and MPH.

You need to set what it calls the speed error so it knows how far you drive to calculate mpg. Set it to 31" divided by stock tire size. That should be 11%.

Then you'll need to calibrate it before you can get an accurate MPG reading. Hook it up, fill the tank, select the "fillup" option on the SGII, press OK. That just lets it know to start counting gallons. Then at your next fill up, go to the "fillup" option and adjust it until it matches the gallons you put in.

The Scangauge was really useful when my Miata was overheating. It would show the temp increase (and decrease) long before the crappy dash gauge did. Now my Jeep is overheating and it's just as good. I can tell exactly when I need to turn off the AC or stop and let it cool down.

Awesome thanks man. I will go read the manual thouroughly when I get it. Thanks for providing the percentage i need to make it read correctly. What would I need to do when I regear?

Ign timing
Throttle position
Air intake temp
Water temp

I watched the water temp climb from 195 (normal for me) to 225 while pulling my pop-up camper up hills last week.

Normally only use it to read and clear codes ....

I always have Coolant Temp displayed ... more accurate than normal dash gauges.

Not much else is of interest .... altho its always a good laugh to watch the open/close loop change-over happen at 65'f ... with no thermostat ... with a 180'f thermostat ... with a 195'f thermostat ..........................

Fuel economy ... mehhh ... its a 4.0l 4x4 .... If I dont get 330+ miles per tank on a trip ... it gets a service.

Same here on the 200! On mine I have load, hp, intake and water temp (sometimes ill put up gallons per hour). Theres a bunch of codes you can program too like a/f ratio and others.

Ignition timing varies depending on rpm and load. Pinging is created by detonation. Normally values are gonna be maybe 10*btdc and something in the 30's

I couldn't get A/F to work but you can still show O2 sensor values. I usually have IAT to see how freakin ridiculous it gets, MPG instant, MPG average, and load.

Oh, and if you hate bright interior lights like I do then you can go to custom back light color and if you put the value to 1 on any of the colors it's a lot dimmer than by just setting the dimmer to low alone.

Yup, I set mine so it matches the backlights to the gauges and turn down the brightness, its a cool tool for sure. It's paid for itself scanning and clearing codes already.

Got it in and set it to show my Average MPG, Actual MPG, Speed, and water temp. Finally got it all calibnrated and it looks like I get about 13 in town and 17 or so on the highway.

Dont forget that the fuel use info is all based on the tank sensor and some other stuff ...

Fuel tank senders are notorious for being innaccurate.

Its why I only use the OBDII console display as an average ... and havent bothered with the scan gauge that relies on the same info sources.

To get accurate, I measure how much fuel I put in the tank to fill it back up, after travelling a reasonable distance.

I've set mine to display temp, voltage, MPH, MPG. I set the MPH using my GPS and it seems to be quite accurate. I like to see the voltage so I'm aware of the load being put on the electrical system. I've had a difficult time setting the economy (MPG) though. Only occassionally is the amount of fuel used close to the amount I'm putting back in. To complicate things, I just recently put new tires on and their weight has affected the mileage settings. Right now my mileage factor is a +4.4. Its not dead on but close enough.
Overall I'm very satisfied with the unit.

Ha, mines like 26.8 or some crazy amount like that. I did the first fill up an it said i used 10.7 gallons. It was more like 13.7.

33o miles? Man I wish. I'm lucky if I pull off 200.
On my way back from Rausch Creek last weekend I got 22.3something mpg. 4.0/AW-4, 3.55 gears, 225/75r15 tires, over a thousand pounds of cargo, doing ~55-70mph (speedo GPS verified, it's spot-on.) Engine and transmission both have over 220 thousand miles on them with no rebuild that I know of. This was calculated from a full tank to a full tank using the number of gallons added, none of the goofy "a tank" measurements people tend to use.

On the XJ... yeah I get lousy mileage. Gotta fix that sometime :dunno:

I've got a ScanGauge II sitting on my doorstep at the moment, if FedEx is to be believed. Can't wait to use it :D

They're pretty sweet little units!

That's where it gets the info on how much fuel is moving? No wonder it varies so wildly.

There are homebrew mileage monitors that take the info from the injector pulse data or something like that. I bet those are more precise. They work on pre-OBDII vehicles too.

It probably just uses that to "trim" the values given by the computer... even the stock overhead computer gives fuel economy numbers, I always figured it was determined using the fuel injector info. I didn't set any options for the fuel tank info in my scangauge II and it was still giving decent estimates.

The ECU knows what temp and pressure the incoming air is at, and what the composition of the exhaust gas is, as well as the expected/assumed fuel pressure, injector flow rate, and injector pulse length, so I see no reason why it couldn't figure out the amount of gas it was using.
