Sanding my DD over time?

Hi. I was wondering it was wise to sand a little bit of my jeep at a time. Since it is my DD and I wouldn't have the immediate "78$" to pay for the paint supplies. I want to do this to help pass the time.

if you get down to the bare metal or if there is rust then you will have to primer the section that you just sanded so that you wont get any rust.

Primer is not a sealer, it is actually absorbant. You really need to paint soon after priming. That is why you see all the primed rusty rigs out there.

First off, If the existing paint is sticking, you should not sand down to metal. Really, if you hit metal, you should use a metal prep even before priming.

So I should just work my ass off with some 2000 grit sandpaper? Would that be the best call of choice?

Ideally wet sand with 400 grit.

So just wet 400 grit sandpaper and go to town? What color should I be seeing when I know to stop? (Its a 98, forest green)

Dont worry about color. Just make sure you are down past any imperfections and there are no shiny spots.

If you've ever waxed it, I'd probably strip the wax off first. That way you won't gum up the sandpaper as much and you can check one more thing off the "things that definitely won't bite me in the arse now" list.

Haha I never waxed it myself. Not to sure about the previous owner. But the paint doesn't feel like it has any wax.

Invest in some wax and grease remover. Autobody grade. If it's really bad, use some Dawn dish detergent, about 1/10 ratio. Wash the piss out of it. Rinse. Dry. Then use your wax and grease remover. Then start sanding. Otherwise, your're going to gum up the paper with tar/grease/contaminants, and it's like dragging a rag full of rocks and trash across your paint. Won't be even at all.

400 is a good place to start. Be careful around the edges, they wear straight through to metal very quickly. And for the love of god, USE A BLOCK. Otherwise it's gonna look like the ocean. Anywhere you hit metal you'll have to use an epoxy, so just sand enough to get the whole thing a consistent dull tone.
