Running rich?

I have a 97XJ with a recently swapped in low mileage engine (about 10K on it). I think I'm running rich. Why do I think ? Well.. the aroma of the exhaust and really poor fuel economy idling/low speed (15~25mph).

How would I test for it? (I was thinking about going to do a smog pretest )

Hook up a scan tool and look at the pids. Short term, long term fuel trims and O2 senser readings will tell you if it's running rich.

Assuming I don't have one of those gismos: any other suggestions or ideas?

Well I guess you could find that thread on testing o2 sensers and see what they are reading or add to you tool collection! I got the same one on sale at sears for 75.

Or you could go to the auto parts store and use thiers.

Hmmm I wonder if mine reads that info too... I only used it for codes in the past.

Might check, it's usually labled under data, running data, or pids.
