Phil and I are planning a trip to Fordyce or the Rubicon on Sat. April 2nd, come along if you're properly equipped.

With the short winter and the warm weather there is a good possibility that it will be melted enough, I'll be keeping tabs on this to see if it's going to be possible. The Rubicon starts at 6340ft and goes to 6779, but Fordyce starts at 5572 and goes to 7764... As of last weekend the snow didn't start at all 'til 5800 and it is supposed to be raining this weekend all the way up to 6500.

If we go to the Rubicon we'll go to Spider and back out. If Fordyce... maybe to the first crossing and back, maybe farther...

So if anyone drives up to Reno in the next two weeks please keep an eye on the elevations and snow levels and let us know. And if you want to go wheelin post up!

I saw lots of snow in the Sierras from the airplane heading to Illinois where I'm at till the 27th with my family. You should have some snow on the Con or Fordyce. Have fun, wish I could come out with you guys. I hope to have my jeep back that weekend and have to drive down to San Diego. Man gas is getting expensive.

I've heard that Tahoe was supposed to get hit with snow this weekend. How much and where, I have no idea. The Dopplar Radar in my rig has been acting up lately.

i'm flying in friday the 1st in the evening and leaving the next saturday the 9th early. in that time I'll be going to San Diego for a few days and probably Chico for a few days, so not much spare time.

my passenger seat is taken, but you could ask phil...

the pass has been closed a few times over the past few days, hopefully you guys will get some good weather. My buddy is going up over the pass tomorrow, I will ask him what conditions are like...

okay, the backup plan is Greenhorn/RedDog near Grass Valley, but I'm still hoping for a few 90 degree days :)

Make sure you post up if ya'll end up @ greenhorn. I'd join ya if this ends up being the case.

The Red Dog area is pretty fun too in the Grass Valley area. You can follow the creek/river and climb some stuff along the river banks and then there are some trails heading off into the surrounding woods.

talked to my buddy, he didn't even make it over the pass, he made it as far as truckee. (didn't have chains for his trailer). He said they got another foot of snow and there is plenty on the ground. Hope this helps.

it's looking more and more likely

do you know Greenhorn pretty well? I always end up going on the same few trails... are there any decent rocks that I just haven't found?

Yeah, I know greenhorn fairly well. And no, there isn't anything that you have missed. Greenhorn, as you have experienced, is a buttload of dirt "trails" ranging from old loggin skids to washed out motorcycle roads... that and the ocasional semi-cool obstacle mixed in. With the exception of a muddy hillclimb or two, I am pretty sure that I have done darn near EVERYTHING there is to do at greenhorn, and thats with a stock size xj. While it has been a GREAT place to start wheelin, the challenge just isnt there anymore.

With that said, I have heard that the lowell hill trail is gnarly, as well as some of the powerline trails. Yet since I lack a built XJ and anyone to wheel with, I cannot confirm any of this. Also, not exactly a winter time excursion, but I have been up the river as far as anyone I know... I think it would be interesting to run the riverbed up to the point where a built rig could no longer run... of course those kinds of excursions are hell on vehicles and usually leaves someone hydrolocked :wierd:

But hey, I take what I can get, and right now greenhorn is what I can get.

i've also followed the river at Greenhorn as far as possible for a truck with 2 lockers and 35s, and walked a bit farther to where you would need 49s. not much there.

where is lowell hill trail? never heard of it? snow covered right now?

we just might get a more difficult run together now with SeanP and Keith Strong: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=340962

well, ive got about 2 inches of fresh snow on my porch right now, and im at around 3000 feet. sunday we headed up twards highway 20(where it meets 80), and was into over a foot of fresh snow before we got there. and its been snowing since then. i think my dads work, up at the ski resort, has gotten over 3 feet over the weekend. so, fordyce is probably under a few feet of fresh snow by now. but this storm is about over, as well.
