Rotella T builds sludge?

Thanks fellas (and ladies if there were any), this was all information that I thought I knew, but after hearing a talking head on the TV machine, I figured I'd back it up with some experience.

Thanks for confirmation of what I thought, there were some very informative testimonials.

Apples and oranges, but....

Rotella T is the oil of choice for a lot of guys who fly experimental aircraft using automotive conversions. These are engines that are worked hard and flown continuously at 75% power.
These guys aren't going to skimp on oil after spending countless dollars and hours assembling an engine. They want what will work.
Rotella T, besides having the zinc phosphate based additives to protect the metal to metal parts and other goodies to keep the engine clean inside, also runs well with heavily leaded avgas (no buildup of lead in the crankcase is a good thing).

It's good stuff, and cheap to boot.

+1 more for using rotella-t in the 4.0

We use it at work in our snowcats, bobcat, backhoe, and when it used to run we used it in our motorgrader. Been putting it in the jeep the past 2 years and the engine seems to run smoother on rotella. Switched to a bosch filter at the same time and my oil looks a lot better every change. Can't be sure if its the oil, filter, or both but I have trouble believing that it builds up sludge with how much better my engine acts and the oil looks.

I don't doubt that Rotella is good oil. I'm afraid that a lot of you guys use the 15W-XX. Most of the wear is on start up, so you need to be using the 5W-XX synthetic to get good oil flow during the major wear period -- start up. Just start searching oil articles on the internet. Look for articles by Dr. Haas. Ferrari club, etc.

I think that it also depends on your driving style. If you are somebody who uses their Jeep for lots of short runs with say 30+ minutes of sitting in between, then yes.

For me, I start my Jeep and usually drive it quite a distance and have it running for long periods of time. I have fewer cold starts, so it doesn't affect me as much.

I'm thinking of switching to rotella T. My question is what is the viscosity of rotella t is it 15w40?

I should probably change my valve cover gasket before i go to synthetic! :D It has needed changed for a while now!
