hey i was thinking about building a roof rack....

could i see some pics of some of ur guys roof racks with the dimensions of it..

so i can get an idea of how big i want it

thanks...

I know this is what you'll always hear when you ask a question like this but honestly the best way to do it is with tape measure, measuring your own rig. I did that and sketched out what I wanted adding dimensions to it as I measured and later made a drawing on engineering paper to scale so I would have a better idea of what I was going to do as I built it. After reading some others posts I though I wanted something I could sleep on and carry a sheet of ply wood on but after measuring I decided that would be too big.
I just finished painting my rack last weekend and will try to get a photo of it and my drawing up on the web tomorrow after work to post if you want. But pictures unless on the vehicle (and mine isn't yet) and drawings done give a real sence for the size and look of a rack on a vehicle and thats why the tape measure is the way to go.

KargoMaster. Simply the best. :)

Here is the link to my roof rack album. I just added a photo of my sketch before I built the rack and a photo of my new completed/painted rack leaning up against a wall waiting for me to finish the other half of the mounts. The sketch is to scale and its on engineering paper where 1 inch on the paper is equal to 1 foot on the built rack. I didn't follow the plan exactly because I had a couple other ideas as I was building but it gives you an idea of what I did. :)

I would recommend Farmer Matt or Kevin's Offroad for roof racks. Probably cheaper then the cost for parts, the time used, and the cost of steel.

Due to a good price, I got a Conferr.

I guess it doesn't matter what i say anymore because I've already been voted infamous around here but JEEParon didn't ask if roof racks would keep the same center of gravity or if they were practical for everyone, but if he could get some dimensions and pics of some rack for options on building his own.
I needed a roof rack because I don't get to go jeepin unless I take the whole family and I need more room for tools, water, high lift, and spare and it was the only thing that could satisfy them all.
I realize with my comment that I'm stirring a cow pie, and it will only produce more stink but I though these forums were to help unless critisism is asked for. Anyways thats my $.02 and I may become more "infamous" but at least I'll be IN Famous so thats a good thing right? :wierd:

I know people have their reasons for them. I'm just stirring the pot a little. Not that anyone asked, but in my view you already have tons of room in the back, and everything that typically goes on a roof rack is heavy, so you know what that does.

Carry on o top heavy wonders!

This is the rack on Brians rig.
I use one. It's great for overnight trips.
Affect on CG unloaded is negligible.
