Roof Rack mounted spare....

One more reason roof-mounted spares can be problematic:

This guy had enough crap on top of his FJ that not only did it raise his CoG too far, it also barely made it out of Rubicon Springs without spotting...
 
throwing the tire off is easy, but ask Woody about chasing the tire down the hill. best way is with help both down and up.

How much can a couple of sleeping bags, a tent and a package of Tushies weigh? :) You need weight to affect the COG.

Just didn't roll those bags tight enough, that's all. :)
 
fill your tires with cement, then you don't need a spare, and you also lower your COG, two birds with one stone.

seriously, when I carried a spare (I don't anymore, I have two tho) I had it on the roof, getting it off is easy, climb up and push it off, getting the flat 36" tire that happens to be filled with Tellico's finest mud back on the roof is where it's a pain in the ass.
