it has come to my attention that in the northern *mid illinois area that there are very few places to wheel "legally"- the closest public land trails are a couple hours away in wisconsin, indiana, and iowa, or hours down south. i've looked online but to no avail. if any body knows of any good places around the rockford area i'd be most appreciative.

alot of the land around here is "watershed" or conservation protected so we have limited options to cornfields and such. and i only make the trip to the U.P. once a summer and my fill of wheeling around here isn't met.

anybody steer a jeeper in the right direction?

btw, i'm aware this is a land use forum type question but it pretains to midwest, i'll take my chances here.

There are NO legal wheeling places in the Rockford vicinity. Not open cornfields and such.. None... what are you a Chevy owner?? Leave the stupidity for ATV riders...

the cliffs insane terrain is proably the closes around you

i believe you miss heard me, i'm saying all there is around here is cornfields and such. which is NOT what i'm into.

btw i wasn't aware of the cliffs existence i'll have to check that out. thank you.

I would recommend the Cliffs Insane Terrain Park also. The place is only 1.5 hours from you at the most; down by LaSalle, IL.

Depending on the weather, it can get muddy there, but there is enough park to enjoy the day without running into too much of the stuff.

I also recommend downloading the waiver and filling it out before you go. It's a measly 4 pages long :D http://www.thecliffsinsaneterrain.com/

Other exciting places closer that WI would be The Badlands (4.5 hours), and perhaps even Hannibal Rocks ( just across the IL/MO border). IIRC, there is a Jeep Club... Central IL Jeep Club or some such, that has access to private land. Also check out any local Jeep Clubs, they also tend to have access to private land.

Also, if I may, I have heard rumor that there are nice National Forests in Southern IL to drive around in, and also there is a group here which visits Redbird State Riding Area in IN... alot.

the cliffs is a bunch of fun, and its really the only place around here. All of my connections have been sold, bulldozed, flattened and remodled. Ill keep my eyes open though. But for the most part, theres nothing. i live in Cary

I'm from Rockford originally, just moved to AZ a little under 2 years ago. I would always make the little trip down to Cliffs, or over to the Badlands, when I needed a wheeling fix. I'd definitely check them out next time you're lookin to go out..

all great, thanks guys- but i do remember checkin out some rides on cardomain, and this guy had this big photo detail of wheeling trip in woodstock, whether it was public land or not is something i do not know. i'll look into that.

i am hearing rumors of land in woodstock...

that "land" they speak of used to be called Gavers...and if you go back there now youll find one mud hole, a small hill and 150 new homes....then you'll find yourself in the backseat of a squad car. It was fun while it lasted, but it was flattened like 3 or 4 years ago.
