Rio MP3 player problems

Okay, so I have never used an MP3 player before, and now have on for Christmas, and can't get the damn thing to work properly.

I am using Rio Music Manager, and am downloading from MusicNow through AOL.

I can get songs on my comp, but cant get them to my MP3 player. It has a small amount of internal memory and I have also added an SD card for more songs.

Anyone have any pointers or clues on what I need to be doing??

Thanks

Are they in the correct file format to transfer over.

If you end up returning it, check out the Apple products. I see all sorts of accessories for them and they are built sturdy too. Mine survived my dog trying to eat it.

Post up what model it is specifically and I'll look thru the instructions.

Good luck, I had a Rio for a few days and sold it on Ebay. It was a PITA to work with and wouldn't deal with many file types.

Archos is nice....

It is a Rio Forge.

Some songs will transfer, but randomly, at least it appears random to me, as I may be doing something wrong.

I'ev tried drag and drop, cut and paste. When I do this, the tracks show up on the player, but no song actually plays.

When I use the Rio Music Manager, it transfers the file, but fails at the end and I get a message saying " Failed to transfer "Name of Song" to player: Failed to transfer DRM file to device."

Everything is set properly, and I have no clue what to do.

Sorry, dude. My experience with these things starts and ends with the 1999-era Rio PMP300, and picks up again somewhere in the 20GB iPod era.

Having said that, the one suggestion I would make is to check that if any drivers are required for the Rio to talk to whatever its software is, that those drivers are properly-installed. It sounds like the device is being seen, but not properly spoken with - and that's often a sign of flaky drivers.

Not trying to be a dick, but return the damn thing and buy an iPod....problem solved.

Seriously though, a buddy of mine got one not too long ago and was running into the same problems as you. Both he and I spent a good two hours trying to figure out how to get the stupid thing to work before we finally gave up.

I've had my iPod nano for almost a year now and not had one bit of trouble out of it. Got a FM Transmitter for it too so I can listen to all my music in the Jeep.

While I have no experiance with the Rio player (I'm a whore to iPod) I'd bet that that right there answers your questions. DRM is Digital Rights Management. It is how they try to keep you from copying files and such. What format are the files that fail in? I'd venture to be they are not MP3, they could be M4p (Apple), WMV (Windows, ick!), or some other form of protected file (did you buy these tracks or rip them?) If you ripped the tracks with Windwos Media Player I think they make them DRM tracks (lame!), others may do this. I do know that iTunes will rip to straight MP3 (no DRM) or AAC (again no DRM but the Rio may not like that format, aac is the default but you can change it easily).

Look closer at your songs, find the format; that may answer your questions. Once you find out if they are files with DRM encoding you have to figure out how to transfer those keys over to the Rio, if it's possible.

Songs are just fine, and all from a free subscription that came with the MP3 player.

I'm downloading some updates right now, so I'll see if that helps.

Check to see if the DRM is "Protecting" the file. Find one of the files that did not work, right click on it, choose properties, then the "summary" tab. There should be (at least on my machine) be a section marked "Origin" with a listing for "Protected." My mp3 collection loaded in iTunes is "no" in the protection field. If it is protected, my guess is that unless it is purchased and flagged as Rio Forge Friendly...it won't play. The free or pay service will give you a License that expires after X amount of time, if it is on your computer. Just because it plays on your computer doesn't mean it will on a MP3 player docked to it. Sometimes for an extra fee they will give you a License to play on approved MP3 Players so you might see if that is something you are willing to do.

I looked thru the rio audio site and found Document 136695 gives you more program specific help with the Rio Software.

Hope it works out for you.
