I am in the process of removing my Auto Trans from my 89 Cherokee.... I have the cross member un-bolted and the two bottom trans to engine bolts out..... How many more trans to motor bolts are there? What is the best way to get them out? Also, do I need to remove my starter? This is behind a 4.0L
thanks,
Trey

I just swapped out an auto trans for a trans and transfer. I believe the starter needs unbolted since i think it bolts into the tranny. There are 2 bolts at the top that are kind hard to get to. They are inverted torx. Can't remember what size but its a pain to get to them. Once you have all the bolts taken out that you can see (not sure how many exactly there are) lower the trans a little bit after taking off the driveshaft and it should make things a little easier to get to the 2 inverted torx's at the top.

Also if you have to replace the torque converter (not sure if you should...someone with more knowledge could help you decide if you have to) there is a cover plate that you have to remove. Once that is removed you will have to spin the motor over from the big nut that is up front until you see the bolt. I believe it is counter clockwise...dont hold me to it though:roll:. Anyways there are 4 of them. More tips can also be given from someone who is more experienced.

Also im not sure if you want to do this but instead of putting the inverted torx's back in (mine were pretty chewed up) i just put some regular bolts in.

Hope this helps:farmer:
