Red Rocket

My jeep is in the air right now, would only take a few minutes to pull the axle back out if you wanted to bring your axle over and use my jeep for mock up purposes.

I appreciate the offer man, where do you live anyway?

My question is more geared towards 'how' to do the mock up though. Is setting up the locations of the lca brackets independent to each rig and it's height and lift? Or is there a standard you go from? And for the truss, it has a cut out for the stock upper control arm mount on the pumpkin, so I guess if I were to just center it up on that it would be clocked right? Is the truss supposed to be parallel to the plane that the differential is milled to?

Truss would stay in the same plane as the diff would, just line it up and burn it in. no need for clocking a truss, the only thing that would need clocking would be the axle C's if you wanted to keep things in check. the main thing you got to worry about is if you raise the LCA up, you need to do the same to the UCA as well to keep the geometry right.

Hey guys, been a little while since I've thought about the jeep because I've been busy with a few other fab projects.

One thing id really like to do is lock the rear axle.

So the way I see it I can get another spartan or lunch box (~$350) or I can get a full case such as the detroit locker (~$660)

Is the full case worth almost double the spartan..? For $660, plus the money I'd have to pay for someone to setup my gears again, i could by two of the Spartans and still be ahead of the game.

Is anyone else on here running a spartan in the rear? The one in my front axle is still doing good, so I just wanted to see what your opinions were.

Thanks guys!

For a street rig get a selectable locker
Auto lockers are good but get annoying on the road and can be dangerous in slick conditions

What's your final tire size? That would I'd imagine be the decision maker. Bigger tires and you'll want a full case locker to reduce gear deflect.

x2 I blame this on being in 4wd with a Detroit up front, Coming around a corner and the detroit not Unlocking.. Straight off the cliff I went..

Granted, It was still user error, as I Knew it would do that, But I forgot I was in 4low (Used to being in 2low all the time)

Auto-lockers can be tricky in slick conditions :confused1

I have a Grizzly front and a 29 spline Spartan in the rear. Have had no issues with them. But like stated above quite tricky on a icy road. When the big snow happened I drove it around Sandy ended up running in 2wd unless I need to take off on a hill. Then it was right back to 2wd on the fly real quick like.

I can't afford a selectable.. If I am going to do that I'll just wait a year or two until I get one tons and then I'd put it in that.

For these axles the biggest I'd go is 35" and that's a stretch.. Most likely I'd just stay with 33's. Good Point though demonoid369.

And I've been driving with the spartan in the front of my rig and dd'd that for a while and didn't have any problems. I couldn't drive it like I would a normal car, but I didn't have any problems.

Is having an automatic locker in the front and rear a real game changed compared to just the front?

Here's another good for thought, hopefully in two years or so I'll have one tons under it.. So I don't want to put tooooo much money into these axles.

When I'm on hard Tarmac and have to go around a corner I let off the gas as much as possible. Then when I'm straight again I put on the gas to speed back up. Some may say, that's easy enough. But you will soon find out how many times a day you really have to gas though a corner. Then the inside tire will either bark or the locker will make a pretty loud snap! Then your on your way and it's all over.

If you're going tons in a year or so, and staying small. Just put a Craigslist lunchbox locker or Lokka in the rear. Then just save for a selectable for the 1tons.

I'd say just lock the rear cheaply, keep the 3.55 gears and stay at 33"-35". Then you can save for the selectable for the 1tons and gears for it.

I wouldnt advise anyone to run stock gearing with 35s..

I say.. Toss your axles in Don't put a dime more into them, run 33s until you go bigger axle

The common misconception is to run whatever tire size fits your lift

IMO (now with experience) run whatever tire size works for your axles

Stay 33s (35s if you have them..) and go to whatever tire size you want when to switch axles

So many opinions. :D

I personally run Detroits front and rear now, and ran Aussies front and rear on the last Jeep. In my opinion full time lockers aren't bad at all, and do exactly what they're supposed to, put power to the wheels. With the automatic, my Detroit is almost invisible on the road. In slick conditions they can be a handful, but you learn to adapt your driving style. I personally like them for their reliability.

As for whether or not the full case locker is worth it. I'd say if you're re-gearing too, then go for the full case (I'd recommend Yukon's Grizzly), but since you're already geared just toss a Spartan in it and be done. Enjoy four tire fire.

What rear axle do you have?

Again though, just my .02.

Lokka lockers front and rear(same maker as Aussie) would cost you 450, to your door, to lock both axles. I have seen no bad reviews yet on them, but no personal exp. I run aussie front and rear, I dont dd my jeep but I drive it to where I wheel, never had an issue. The rear is fun in the snow! The front you never notice unless youre in 4wd

the only time my rear ausi acts up is Throttling through the corners, then letting off before the corner is finished. Id say a 1 in 10 times ratio that this happens under these circumstances, its really not bad. just a "wake up call"

My only worry is breaking the carrier, but Im EZ on her most of the time.

Bronze.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it!

My rear axle is a c8.25, 29 spline.

I'm thinking I'll go in the direction of getting an Aussie for the rear.

But every picture I see online of them for sale, it doesn't have a cross pin? Does it not need one because it's a C clip axle? Or does it come with one and they just don't show it?
