Recovery points!

I am looking for some ideas for recovery points on my 2001 XJ. It is completely stock right now and I am going to be very slowing adding to it and building it up. First on my list are some recovery points for the front and rear. I have been up under it and cannot find anything that is really meant for recovery. Can I add some tow hooks? What do you all reccomend for recovery points?

Custom4x4fabrication.com has nice Tow Hook brackets for the front. For the rear a good class 3 receiver will be good for a newb.

holy crap..Flex atually had something productive to add to a conversation..and it is even factual! Oh, I am so going to subscribe to this thread! :D

He is correct though, those are good tow hook brackets and a rear receiver is good in our books as long as it is mounted in a secure manner and tied in correctly.

You so funny Tyler! :D

Flex must have left his PC logged in an someone else was using it. :D

As has been said, you must use either the OEM mount or an aftermarket mount. Do not just bolt hooks on the "frame" and call it done, it WILL fail a tech.

I have hitches, front and rear.

On the front it ties the "frame rails" together for a stronger recovery point.
I also have hooks on the front.

That's where I'd put my money. Although you do lose a little on your front approach angle with it. I've yet to put my front hitch on yet though.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am searching for a hitch but so far no dice. Do any of you guys know of any junkyards around the lafayette area or somewhat close to lafayette?

The local yard here has one. I'll check on the price & let you know. Pretty sure it could make it to Brewfest & back down to W. Lafayette. JIM.

Brad(GoSlowGetStuck) could be coerced as long as there is room for my front axle! :D

no welded hooks either.

Watch the various forums, too- there's a set of brackets/tow hooks on JeepForum for sale right now. They turn up periodically as people upgrade/part out. I've had almost 0 luck at any yards in the area (Indy and Ft Wayne, mostly)- I wound up getting almost everything either through a vendor here or off other Jeepers on the forums.

If you would check on that price and get back to me that would be great.

They want $60 for the hitch. They cut the bolts to get it off, so no hardware or nut strips. JIM.

For something as important as a hitch, whether used for recovery or towing, I'd think twice about buying used. I've seen more than a few factory XJ hitches that were severely rusted, not necessarily from road salt, but due to the fact that they somewhat reinforce the unibody, and are therefore subject to stress, especially where the cross tube is welded to the frame mount pieces.

This would come with mounting hardware too.

I don't think that's a problem with this one, it looks fairly new. I may be able to get the brand name & part # off of the stickers. The flat 4 plug & wiring look to be new too.
